David Hicks' Daily Doings

Being a weblog recounting my daily concerns and activities.

A martini, yesterday.

Was much chuffed to disover Sainsbury's selling a minature (5cl) bottle of Martini vermouth the other day. Seemingly it was some sort of one-off special promotional widgit that ended up in the minatures selection cabinet somehow. Anyway, I wish they would sell them normally - I like martinis, but not so much that I can get through a whole full-sized bottle of vermouth.

Anyway, that coupled with a semi-minature (10cl) bottle of vodka (c'mon - any greater ratio of vodka to vermouth in "a martini" and you might as well quit the pretense and call it "a vodka") made a damn nice (and quite large) martini. I even went to the trouble of frosting the martini glass (okay, a wine glass...) and including an olive on a cocktail stick (okay, an olive on a freshmint-tipped interdental toothpick, which was all I had to hand. It probably added a certain something...).

Note the chewy, part-formed baby dragon. Some dragon's eggs - a regular nest of 'em, by the looks of things! Finally managed to get hold of some more Harry Potter Dragon eggs. These things are so cool, much better than those sissy Cream Eggs that were all we got in my day. For a start, they're all different colours on the outside. On the inside they split into two halves filled with some sugary, calorie-filled substance that is a different colour on each side on the egg. And the coolest bit is that they have a small chewy jelly bit in, like a part-formed baby dragon! So neat!

I shall call it... the Pizcake.

The Pizcake:

Before you start, make sure you have your cheese grated and all your toppings prepared. The cheese tends to melt quite fast and if you don't get a move on you'll have it running all over the bloody place.

Cook a pancake. A nice thick one. Use a frying decent pan - I've got one of those fancy extra-tough, extra-non stick ones that you can stick in the oven and whatnot. I figure you can cook everything in a frying pan, so you might as well invest in a decent one.

Leave the pancake in the pan but remove from the heat. Spread pizza sauce over the top of your pancake. You can't see this in the photograph as I forgot this step myself (anyone any tips for how to use up left-over pizza sauce rather heavy on the garlic?). I still reckon it's a good idea, though.

Sprinkle cheese over, then arrange olives, meat, etc, etc, on top.

Place under the grill for a few minutes until nice and crispy and brown.

Voila, like wot they say in le France.
