How well has Bush kept his campaign promises? Here is a mid term scorecard which we will be extending over time. One area we could not fill in was education which Bush spent an awful lot of time talking about during the campaign but we can't quite remember any specific promises.

We have divided Bush's campaign promises into three categories, the ones that were kept, the ones he tried to keep but failled on and the ones that were clearly made with absolutely no intention of keeping them.

Area Promise Kept Comment
Bipartisanship A Uniter not a Divider Broken Despite campaigning on his bipartisanship, much of the Bush agenda was lost after the Republicans lost control of the Senate. Why did Jeffords defect? Because Bush was so partisan he couldn't even tolerate moderates in his own party who opposed his extremist views.
Energy Drill in ANWAR Failed But not for lack of trying. Dick Cheney's Energy taskforce produced a report that looked like it had been written by oil men, which of course it was. The Energy Bill dies in the senate after the Republicans lost control and the Administration refused to reveal the extent to which it was written by Enron et. al.
Charities Faith based initiative Failed Another plan that was going nowhere after losing control of the senate
Environment Nevada Waste Broken Had Nevada known that Bush campaign promises don't count if not made by the candidate on camera there is no way he would have won the state.
Social Security Privatize It! Failed One might think that this was not the most opportune moment to suggest putting social security funds into the stock market right? The Bush Administration thinks otherwise and is still promoting the idea even though even the most lunatic Republicans in Congress won't touch it.
Health Senior Prescription Broken Big noise during campaign, but clearly keeping this promise was always going to come second to the tax cut
Economy Balance the budget Broken Another promise made with no intention of keeping it.
Tax Cut Tax Cut for the Rich Kept This is the one promise did keep, social security, health, balanced budget, everything else was abandoned for this one overriding objective
