The "President" has spent 42% of his time in office at one of three leisure spots. This, according to a story in the Cleveland Plain Dealer today, courtesy of Dana Milbank at the Washington Post . . . The story was about CBS News reporter Mark Knoller (which makes it, I suppose, the journalistic equivilant to blogrolling) who's passion is presidential statistics. According to Knoller's figures, Bush has spent 250 days of his first (and, I hope, only) term of office in either Camp David, Kennebunkport (with Poppy and Barr) and his Texas ranch. This doesn't count fundraisers and other political trips. Knoller says W has devoted more time to golf than to solo news conferences and has raised $9.8 million more at 48 GOP events than Clinton raised in 2000 from 203 events.

In Driver 8, Charly Z writes some interesting thoughts on how to increase one's "hits" on the blog, how to get the blog seen, or at least visited more often. The great thing about blogs is that everyone can use them however they see fit. It's great to be able to figure out ways to maximize your hits, but I hope that won't affect the quality of writing. . . I'm of two minds here. For me, writing is much more than a popularity contest, seeing who can put up the most numbers on the board. As Charly says, including "fuck" in every post to attract that certain subset of Google users isn't the most attractive option. . . On the other hand, I write on this forum so others will see it. If nobody reads, I might as well keep it to myself. When other people read, it's validation for my self and my ideas and, to one degree or another, I think it's what most of us want. . . . This isn't criticism of Driver 8 or Charly, who is incredibly literate and finds interesting things on which to comment. I'm not sure what to think about the whole "hits" issue, except to say that I check every day, too (and am thinking of renaming my blog "No Code - Stupid Pornographers Astrology Excrement Only). dwf 10:49:01 AM  Comments?()
