With the demise of Very Modern Astrology, Maxine has stepped up to the plate with Maxine's Radio Weblog. The stories are good, but scroll down for even better. There are photos and captions that are, quite simply, funny as hell (and we all know just how funny that can be)!
Well, it's not actually true that Very Modern Astrology is gone, Elsa's just gone from Salon. her original digs are at Xanga and she continues to rock as always. |

In the ER and other places, this is the Season of the Yellow Jacket. Two patients yesterday came in with multiple stings and difficulty breathing. Fortunately, they came in quickly and were easy to treat. Multiple stings are uncomfortable, but not life-threatening for the majority of people. But for those with bee allergies, it can be a lot different. The problem is the little winged-critters are losing their sources of nectar - flowers and such, and have to turn to other sources, especially fermenting fruit found lying on the ground. What you get is a drunken, belligerent wasp - one that, unlike honey bees, can sting you many times. Stir up a nest and it's like walking into a flying cattle-prod. People with bee allergies (more specifically, allergies to the venom of bees and wasps) can find their throat swelling, constricting their airway. Then it takes IV medications to turn it around. I have never seen anyone die from bee stings, but I know it can happen. Both my patients got lots of drugs and went home.
But the wasps are just beginning to party. |

Lots of outrage these days on Scott Rosenberg's blog concerning Salon's decision to publish a less-than-reverent article concerning the response the the terrorists' attacks. You wouldn't think a story headlined "Forbidden thoughts about 9/11" would catch anyone by surprise. Besides, the sub-head says "From gloating about getting off work to enjoying the "country road" ambience of lower Manhattan to hating on-the-make firemen: A spectrum of improper responses to the terror attacks."
Logic and truth-telling be damned, some people still read the article and found themselves amazed and offended by what lay within. It incited a lot of outraged comments about the decency and timing. (OK, the timing could have been more sensitive. Nothing demanded that it be published on 9/11.) But the headlines are there for a reason! It's like everything else from NASCAR and Anna Nichole Smith to Andrew Sullivan and Bill Buckley, if you don't like it, move on and find something you do! |
