I've been reading blogs today, just looking at some of my favorites and discovering a few others. There is, amidst the dross of the blog world, some absolute gems of wit, intelligence, original thought and good writing. There are blogs I read and think that I should give up any thoughts of writing, because I'll never get that good. (Of course, there are others, but I won't get into that) True Porn Clerk Stories is exactly what you'd expect - and not. The author (I don't know her name and she probably doesn't use her real one anyway) writes about the sometimes wierd and sometimes sad people who frequent the store where she works. She is funny, thoughtful, straightforward and philosophical. "What do women want? The real answer is too hard. Women want you to be independent but emotionally available. They want you to be attached but not smothering. They want time and attention, and also some time alone. They want you to grow and change with them. They want you to be all kinds of things, and it's going to be a different list for every woman, and that list is always subject to change without notice. For some men, and many of my regular porn addicts, I think, fall into this category, the answer is that women want you to change that glaring personality flaw and learn to talk to them like a human being. Maybe they want you to take a frigging shower." . . . Frivolous lawsuits, useless research and creationists are some of the things that capture the attention of Secular Blasphemy. Especially interesting was his link to an article explaining the fallacies of the Intelligent Design theory and why it degrades not only science but religion. . . . Maxine's Radio Weblog has only been around Salon for six weeks, but she has become a sort of rennaissance blogger. In that short time she has produced cartoons, a series of captioned pictures of women mannequin heads discussing their lives like a "Sex and the City" for wigmakers, essays and entertaining and well-written stories. She is working on a "bio/novel" called "My Summer With the Movie Star." An excerpt - The precious reality everyone is so hot for began just before school let out for summer while I was still deeply engaged in a long-running fantasy about my English teacher--a Mr. David Feldman, star of every original fantasy production by Sylvia. A typical double feature, playing at the other Fox Westwood Village Theatre--the one located just behind my temporal lobes--was Mr. Feldman and Sylvia Do It On His Desk After School plus the sizzling sequel held over by popular request, Mr. Feldman And Sylvia Do it In Front of the Entire Senior Class. The credits roll just behind my eyes. Screenplay by Sylivia. Special Effects by Sylvia, Torn Underwear by Sylvia. And so forth. Maxine is an original mind and her work deserves to be seen and read. As does Elsa of Very Modern Astrology. She used to have a blog on Salon. Since then, she devotes her efforts to her original site of the same name on Xanga. Mother, astrologer and former Frito-Lay sales rep, Elsa is funny as hell. She combines audacity, a cynical glibness and crisp writing and balances it with a warmth that welcomes us into her world. And her daughters seem to be as sharp as she is. . . . "Mosta saw the tooth fairy last night. She said that she was driving away the evil, the fear and the bad. She had a long pink dress and pink sparkly shoes, and she left her a big envelope with some cash and a receipt. Receipt says "Receipt for one tooth. Thank you, The Tooth Fairy". She has nice handwriting. She reports that one of the kids in her class lost a tooth on Christmas Eve, and Santa and the Tooth Fairy collided at her house and she saw them kiss. " Driver 8 is Charly Z's. It is a literate, eclectic and sharp collection of observations, references and essays. "talking to air" was kind enough to link to something I wrote and I went there to check it out and so should you. It contains wonderful photos and embedded links and, other than vancouver, I'm not sure if there is a common thread or not. But it's cool. And, of course, there is my personal hero - Pesky the Rat . Pesky has the inside scoop on politics and knows where all the cheese is buried.
There is a lot of good writing out there, so much more than I've even had time to discover. More than a simple web diary, the best of blogging has originality, freshness and point-of-view. I hope even more people discover this great resource. |
