There's a lot of Democratic hand-wringing these days. I join with those others saying we've got to do "something", but what? The folks at Progressive Majority seem to have the right idea: that it's time to rescue the Democratic party from the Republican wanna-be's.

"For too long," they say" progressives have either been silent - or needlessly defensive . . . that era is over."

"Within the Democratic Party, a debate rages about who will assume leadership and whether the party needs to move to the right or to the left in order to better connect with voters. We say the pro-business, me-too Democrats have had their turn. Now it[base ']s time to embrace a proactive, progressive agenda that voters can understand and support."

They substitute the label of "progressive" for "liberal". That's not a bad idea. Progressive speaks to what I and many others believe. We need to progress beyond the old ways of doing things and that especially includes allowing the environment to deteriorate both locally and globally and providing the biggest tax relief to the richest one per cent.

"It's time," say the authors, "to offer up our own agenda, rather than following the Republican blueprint. We must outline a true economic stimulus plan, address budget matters directly, confront corporate malfeasance, demonstrate a plan for job creation, and address the health care crisis. And we must do all this while ensuring that voters know that we will protect their individual and civil rights and remain responsible on global matters." They have announced plans to recruit viable candidates to advance "practical progressive" goals. It sounds like they might be worth checking out.
