Free speech came under attack in Washington state this week by the party in power. According to an AP story, Senator Patty Murray (D) told a group of high school students this week that Osama bin Laden's popularity in poor countries comes in part from his willingness to fund schools, roads and daycare facilities.

"We haven't done that," said Murray. "How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to bomb in Iraq?" In response, the state GOP chairman sputtered, "It is absolutely outrageous and despicable to imply that the American government should learn a lesson from the madman who murdered thousands of American citizens."

If there are lessons to be learned, we probably ought to learn them, no matter the source. Please note that Senator Murray doesn't suggest we are to blame for 9/11, nor did she paint bin Laden as warm and fuzzy., calling him, instead, "an evil terrorist." But she suggests that we could do a lot more to help poor people around the world and that helping would create some much-needed goodwill.

The GOP's "Ashcroftian" response suggests that the only opinions that matter are those which agree Cheney-Rumsfeld, et al.

Andy's World is a blog from Austin, Texas, written by Andy Meadows. He's a business and web technology consultant and aspiring writer. He's also given me a couple nice plugs on his site. Andy's the one who first pointed me toward Google Zeitgeist, their year end analysis of who and what was hot this year in web searches. Sadly, No Code didn't make their list. Any, thanks Andy!
