February sucks! The fact that it is the shortest month is the only redeeming factor in an otherwise dismal season. March may be "the cruelest month", but that is only because the promise betrayed is that of spring which is sure to come by (late) April. From the vantage point of February, all we have in front of us is another month of winter.

Winter is depressing, what with cold weather, treacherous driving and lots more darkness than light. Winter sports are just something to keep the orthopedic surgeons employed between football and baseball seasons. If I lived in California or Texas, it would be bearable. The northern states and provinces are, instead, proud of their ability to take whatever nature dishes out and continue to function. When I was in the Navy and stationed in Memphis (don't ask), there was a day when they received about half an inch of snow. Traffic was fouled up, schools were closed, cars were skidding out of control and Northerners stood around cackling and wondering what all the fuss was about.

Being of a depressive nature on the best of days, winter becomes a constant battle to get out of bed, a constant struggle to find meaning and purpose and motivation. Writing, never fun, seems ponderous and boring - as do I. Ennui seems a religion and eating, its sacrament. However, the pharmaceutical industry keeps me off the gas pipe and the promise of spring and sunlight and warmth keeps me from watching infomercials at 3 a.m. - keeps me trudging, however reluctantly, toward the light.
