Have you ever met anyone who didn't like music? Not classical or rock or jazz or alpenhorn solos? Anything? I couldn't imagine it until a friend of mine told me about an operating room nurse he met. They were standing around the OR talking about music. This woman almost brought the surgery to a halt when she revealed that she didn't like music. At all. Nothing. We came to the conclusion that someone who doesn't like any kind of music at all has no soul. There is a CD player in the small, suburban emergency department where I work. Most of the time it's tuned to one of the top 40 stations, but after midnight, I put on CD's. Anyone is free to bring in CD's and play what they want. The doc I worked with complained one night about some St. Germaine (kind of trip-hop, trance music) as being "LSD music". Well, I guess there's some justification for that. So tonight, I tried to keep things lighter. Sheryl Crow wasn't safe enough, so I broke out the Stevie Ray Vaughn. "Is that more of that LSD music?" "What? That's Stevie Ray Vaughn. It's just straight-ahead Blues. You've heard of the blues, haven't you?" "Well, it sounds like 'LSD music'. Either turn it down or turn it off." "Sure, but just so I know, what is LSD music?" (no answer) "No, really, what's LSD music?" "That is." "Oh. . ."
So I broke out the Sade. It didn't seem to remind her of any illicit drugs. Or anything else. I have the horrible feeling that she has the complete Neil Diamond collection. |
