I've been watching live pictures of Iraqis dancing in the streets of Baghdad, many for the first time in their lives. Their exuberance at being able to demonstrate and shout is infectious. The reign of terror is, one hopes, ended. I wonder what will happen to them tonight or tomorrow or next month. I was opposed to this war and still believe that the reasons for America's invasion were not rooted in some altruistic desire to free the people of Iraq. That good came from this action appears to be certain. It's far less certain what's in the future for Iraq, the Middle East and the U.S. Will there be complete destabilization.? Will the U.S. ever get to leave Iraq and, if so, will Iran immediately invade their neighbor? For all the good that it seems to have done, we have still given license to other nations to invade perceived enemies without provocation. We are seen as having put our oil interests ahead of any other concerns, a perception that certainly seems justified. After all, if we can assure a steady flow of oil from Iraq, we can dump our corrupt and faltering allies in Saudi Arabia (home to 11 of 12 September 11th terrorists).
And have you noticed that we still haven't found any chemical or biological weapons in Iraq? |

I heard political humorist Mark Shields on the radio this morning saying that Dick Armey, Tom Delay, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle and Dick Cheney sitting around trading war stories would be the definition of a perfect silence. 8:18:13 AM |
