Not much room left on those Florida beaches...
Competition from developers makes it harder for those tired manatees to find a place to rest. Apparently the Florida Department of Environmental Protection rarely invokes the law designed to protect the beaches.

Manatees take a beach break
The pilot whales aren't the only ocean mammals on the beach this week. Down in Florida, six female manatees climbed out of the water, apparently needing a rest from pursuing males. Authorities say the manatees, unlike the pilot whales, are just fine and will return to the water soon.

Misc News of the Day
• There's a pod of pilot whales stranded off the coast of Cape Cod. Locals have floated them out to sea once already, but the whales beached themselves again, so things don't look good.
• The EPA is proposing to clean up emissions from boats and motorcycles. About time that department tried to clean up something.
• Australia is having some success fighting infestations of fire ants, using a kind of birth control chemical.
• UK scientists warn that insects are adapting to chemical sprays faster than new ones can be developed. I'm sensing a theme here...
