One million acres of forest protected in Cambodia
Until last year, the area was slated for logging
This week, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen signed into law a declaration creating the Central Cardamom Protected Forest. The Cardamom Mountains and surrounding area have long been recognized as a primary Asian stronghold for many key species, and are part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot.
Combined with two adjacent wildlife preserves, this law brings a total of 2.44 million acres of mountain, forest, and jungle under government protection. Wonderful news for those of us who love elephants, tigers, and bears.

Fires continue around the world
Heat and lack of rainfall have contributed to a large peat fire outside Moscow. Residents are advised to stay indoors since the air quality is so poor. And, as happened earlier in Arizona, two fires in Oregon are about to merge. The resulting fire covers 180,000 acres.

Beetle collecting can be dangerous!

Japan's own beetles are rare now due to destruction of their habitat. Many prefer foreign beetles because they are larger and look more ferocious.
