Explore biodiversity

The United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (Unep-WCMC) has released a World Atlas of Biodiversity. This interactive map allows the user to create maps presenting species or habitats as they change over time. The atlas shows graphically how biodiversity has changed over time, and details human impact on land and animals in the past. You can use the IMAPS (interactive maps service) to project impacts and species into the future — for example, watching as roads move further into the jungle — and also use it as a modelling device to view how changes in policy might impact biodiversity.

I wasn't able to get the new service running when I tried it, but the older IMAPS on coral reef disease, turtles, and migratory birds give some idea of how the system works.
