Creationists sue biology professor
A creationist student and the Liberty Legal Institute, a religious group, considers to sue Professor Michael Dini of Texas Tech University in Dallas because he refuses to write letters of recommendation for students who do not accept evolution. The Justice Department investigates the complaint.
Professor Dini refers potential students to his website, where he asks ""How do you think the human species originated?" He then moves on to state that "If you cannot affirm a scientific answer to this question, then you should not seek my recommendation for admittance to further education in the biomedical sciences."
The Liberty Legal Institute asserts that students are refused the recommendations "solely because of their personal religious beliefs."
Professor Dini should be commended for being upfront about this. A creationist has no more place in biology than a flat-earther has in geography. As the eminent biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky said, "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution." No student should be encouraged to seek post-graduate education in a field if he or she pays mere lip-service to its fundamental principles. The religionist arguments here are absurd. Students are not being refused because of their religious beliefs, but for their lack of understanding of and acceptance of science. If rejection of science is their religious belief, they should seek a monestary not a university.
PS: It is interesting to note the differences in reporting about this case. The New York Times tries to keep a neutral tone. The UK's Guardian ironises openly over the case, and comments that "Texas has the country's only Creation Evidence museum." In the news item in KCIT in Texas, the journalist apparently struggles to understand the issues, and even writes "The fact still remains -- belief in a creator is a major tenet of Christianity," (d'oh!) indicating that theism excludes evolution.

After much speculation, it has been confirmed that at E3 this May, Microsoft will unveil their smaller-sized Xbox hardware. The size of the new hardware, being referred to as ?Xbox Lite? will be very similar to the Playstation 2; in addition to the console losing much of the textured top cover of the console, the Xbox Lite will be capable of being stacked for more convenience and space-saving capabilities. No word yet on whether or not the console will be able to be turned on it's end (a la PS2).
On top of the new design, Xbox Lite will also lead to the future of the system, as well as Xbox Live. The new hardware will be integrated with Microsoft?s Media2Go portable media storage/transfer accessory. In conjunction with Xbox Live (or even by networking to a PC), Xbox owners will be able to purchase and download full-length movies, music, and quite possibly even games onto their Xbox.

Absolute aanrader: Bieslog. Wim De Bie is geboren om een weblog te schrijven. En hij doet dat dan ook ongelooflijk goed.
Ik kan mijzelf wel vervloeken dat ik hem niet vroeger ontdekt had.
De les voor vandaag is: er nooit van uitgaan dat documenten al ooit wel eens doorgemaild zijn en dus niet meer belangrijk om te houden.
Scenario: ding doorsturen in attachment donderdag, vrijdag beginnen laptop opkuisen (en harddisk defragmenteren en al), dus overbodige documenten uitwissen, maandag te weten komen dat het attachment er donderdag niet bij zat.
Aaargh. En met hersenen die appelmoes zijn, is het niet vanzelfsprekend om zo'n document opnieuw te gaan zitten samenstellen.
Spooky: als ik in bed lig, krijg ik niet genoeg adem. Mijn keel is gelijk dichtgenepen, en ik krijg van die paniekaanvallen als ik half in slaap val.
Ziek zijn is iets raars. Vrijdag zaten we (=Free en ik) laat te werken, en ik voelde mij ziek worden. Een droge keel, hoestneigingen, zo'n onbestemd gevoel van slecht worden.
Thuisgekomen, en zaterdag effektief wakker geworden met enorm pijn aan mijn keel. En hoofdpijn, ugh! Rond de middag moet ik al serieus koorts gehad hebben: ik lag in bed met een soort visoenen dat mijn borstkas in allemaal kubussen onderverdeeld was, dat die langzaam opgevuld raakten met slijm, later in de nacht met zand, en nog later in de nacht werden het kleine vierkantige franse daken met mansardes.
Zondagnacht, ik denk rond een uur of vijf, moet de electriciteit uitgevallen zijn in heel het huis: Zelie werd wakker emt een huil van paniek, Sandra heeft ze geparkeerd in de badkamer en is met licht (ik denk zelfs mijn portable, het enige lichtgevende voorwerp in het hele huis) naar beneden gegaan om de hoofdplomb weer aan te zetten.
Ik heb dat duidelijk bewust meegemaakt, want anders zou ik het mij niet kunnen herinneren, maar teelijkertijd had ik het gevoel dat de lichten in de mansardes in mijn borstkas één voor één uitgingen, en dat de duisternis van de lichten die uitgingen zich naar mijn hoofd verplaatste.
Enfin, ik had ondertussen zodanig pijn aan mijn rug dat ik opgestaan ben, even naar beneden genipt ben, en dan in de trekzetel gaan liggen. Daar een paar uur liggen zieltogen, en dan weer naar bed. Nog een paar uur angstdromen, en dan weer naar de trekzetel verhuisd. Naar tv gekeken op minimum volume wegens hoofdpijn.
En nu lig ik hier weer. Ik moet niet echt meer veel hoesten, maar ik kan niet meer ademen. En ik heb weer enorm hoofdpijn.
