Toby's Political Diary - 'Let it Begin Here'
I am from Lexington, Massachusetts. I believe the "war on terror" is a threat to democracy both here and abroad. Over 200 years ago, John Parker, Captain of the 70 Lexington Minutemen facing 700 heavily armed British soldiers said "Stand your ground. Don't fire until fired upon. But if they mean to have a war, let it begin here." Thus began the American revolution. The spirit of this web site is to support the ideals of justice, equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness where they are under attack today. --Toby Sackton

Evil on Both Sides Department

One of the most despicable things in America is the relentless drumbeat that our enemies are evil, and that our friends are not.  When asked why the U.N. should go to war to enforce security council resolutions against Iraq, but ignore the history of violations by Israel, Bush said that because Israel was a democracy, it was different.

Read this commentary from Haaretz on the radical settlers in Hebron, who are as nasty a group of evil doers as you'll find on the planet.  How can a democracy claim any moral superiority when it allows free reign to one group of people to terrorize another.

Also in this department, read the following comments from the British MP George Galloway.  Thanks to Horst Prillinger for the link.  He has a transcript of a CNN interview.

Asked if he didn't find Saddam Hussein's regime scary, Galloway said:

"Well, there are lots of regimes in the world that are scary. Frankly, George W. Bush's regime is the one that's scaring most people in Britain at the moment, because they fear that this man is going to take us all over a cliff."

Here CNN's Jim Clancy interjected that Galloway couldn't say that Bush would use chemical weapons against his own people. Galloway answered:

"Well, President Bush executed rather a lot of people, and the United States dropped an ocean of chemical weapons on the people of Vietnam. And I've seen the children still being born deformed today as a result of the gallons and gallons [...] of Agent Orange which the United States dropped on Vietnam just 25 years ago. So I don't think you should be too precious about this."

The point is that there are many faces of evil, including in our own hearts.  To say evil exists only with your enemy is to be blind to your own potential failures.  This is the mind of a madman, who is so sure he is right that he would "destroy a village in order to save it."

Note to fellow Salon bloggers:  I am out of town for a few days, and one of the worst things about Radio is that there is no way to do remote posts.  So nothing more from me until the weekend.  Does anyone have a good solution for posting to a weblog that doesn't depend, like Radio, on only a single computer.  Or have I missed something here.  If you have a suggestion, please email.

Also for Boston Area readers, there will be a large demonstration to greet President Bush Friday evening, Oct. 4th.  If you are in the Boston area, here are the details.
