Toby's Political Diary - 'Let it Begin Here'
I am from Lexington, Massachusetts. I believe the "war on terror" is a threat to democracy both here and abroad. Over 200 years ago, John Parker, Captain of the 70 Lexington Minutemen facing 700 heavily armed British soldiers said "Stand your ground. Don't fire until fired upon. But if they mean to have a war, let it begin here." Thus began the American revolution. The spirit of this web site is to support the ideals of justice, equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness where they are under attack today. --Toby Sackton

Thank God for Dana Millbank

Dana Millbank of the Washington Post appears to be one of the few mainstream reporters in America who actually is reporting on Bush's lies and distortions.  I hope he doesn't get pulled back by his conservative editorial board, who are now afraid of Republican shadows.

What is unfolding in Iraq and the Middle East is a U.S. disaster of monumental proportions, brought about largely because of the arrogance and inexperience of George Bush, and his wingnut ideologues.

Bush lied about Sept. 11th.  His first, and worst lie, was that there is a "war" on terrorism.

There is no war on "terrorism".  Instead, there are police and security activities to find, arrest, and try terrorists.  Because Bush is used to Texas justice, i.e. execute first, question later, he has totally failed to understand the importance of evidence and public trial as a weapon in forging political consensus.

Terrorists are not mad fanatics who hate "freedom".  Generally, they are fanatics angry about specific policies--and today the policy that is drawing the greatest attack is the determination of the U.S. to dominate the politics of the middle east and Israel.

If Bush had said this tragedy, (of Sept. 11th), illustrates the danger we face from terrorism, so I pledge to strengthen our police, investigative, and intelligence forces to prevent such disasters in the future.  Secondly, the U.S. will remain vulnerable so long as we must protect unstable oil supply lines.  Today we have the technology to abandon oil as our primary energy source.  Tonight, I am announcing a crash program to cut our oil usage from overseas sources by 50% within 10 years.   I will protect America by making Saudi Arabia and Iraq irrelevent to our strategic interests.

If we can get Bush and his ideologues out of power, perhaps in twenty years we can have the same relationship with the arab countries that we have with Vietnam today.
