Hope
Don't miss Al Gore's speech today. It is a very clear statement that actions have consequences, and that Bush's denial of the humanity of his enemies, including his renounciation of the Geneva Convention, has led directly to the torture cells of Abu Ghraib.
This has been a difficult year for our Lexington Justice and Peace Committee. We won town meeting approval of a resolution opposing the USA Patriot Act, but we did it in such a way that it mostly involved town meeting politics, not in a way to build our organization. it felt good to win, but it was not enough.
So the other night we had a small meeting to just talk about our feelings--where we were, what we thought was happening in our country. The consensus was that most of us were fundamentally and emotionally upset at the carnage in Iraq. We didn't agree on stragegy--immediate pull out vs. some more limited withdrawal--but we all felt that the fundamental violation of the basic human rights and humanity of the Iraqi's, typified by the torture at Abu Ghraib, made us want to stand up and show there are different Americans.
I think a lot of people feel this way. That is giving me hope.
