Weekly Target...Of Hate!!! -- Nelly
Okay, this one's too easy, but I was asked to handle it, and I would have eventually. Might as well be now.
Nelly is NOT the worst rapper ever (thanks in large part to Ja Rule). But that, partially, may be due to the fact that, like Puffy, I'm not sure if I'd even call him a rapper.
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony already did the sing-song thing, and no one's been dumb enough to try and make a living biting that steez...until now. Nelly has taken this thing and run with it, and MTV has picked him up and carried him to stardom -- on the TRL level, at least.
To real hip hop heads, Nelly is a complete joke -- which is why it didn't matter that KRS couldn't even put together a dope enough verse to dead him. No one gives Nelly props anyway. And why should they? He's not doing something new...and he's not doing it nearly as well as the originators, who weren't that dope to begin with. That whole act was played out by '96.
Not to white AmeriKKKa, though. They're eating it up, and as a result millions of kids have an even more skewed view of what good hip-hop really is.
This is sad, because those of us who love and live the shit don't consider Nelly hip hop. He's a pop artist, and while he can get all the money in the world, he'll never get the respect...and you KNOW it kills him, even if he'll never admit that.
When KRS said, "even St. Louis don't like you," he probably wasn't kidding. Nelly gets love from the TRL set, but hip hop heads aren't buying his act, and they never will.
I guess I could say a lot more mean shit, but Nelly doesn't really bother me as a rapper -- because I don't really consider him to be one.
I'll save my venom for Ja Rule and Puffy...Nelly sucks, but he can't harm a genre he's not considered a part of.
Sorry I'm not as mad as some of you might have hoped. I'll try harder next time.
