Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often. Last year, Kathy and Hilary got together and reread their letters. They thought they were funny and hoped others might think so too. They propose to post alternating installments of these 32-year-old letters when they get around to it. We promise not to clean up mispellings, bad grammar, or silly opinions.

August 29, 1970 [first page written on Peanuts stationary with a picture of Charlie Brown saying "I never worry about how I start the day.... it's how it ends up that bothers me!"]

Dear Kathy. OH! I miss you already! I felt so dumb at the airport. Gale kept looking at me as if I'd lost my mind. When the door closed I put on my sunglasses so that no one would see the red eyes - even so my nose was all splotchy! Whether or not you noticed we ran onto the flight deck and waved as the Mobile Lounge pulled away. We waited almost 1/2 an hour for the stupid plane to take off as I noticed that you had to wait for the plane to unload first. All the time I kept having to lift up the sunglasses to wipe my eyes -

Continued Sunday morning. OH! I am so depressed! Tomorrow - school! and today Liza went on a rally so we have to babysit! I could have gone to West Virginia on Friday with the Rs. On Friday night we went to Chris's party. Gale wasn't there - I thought she would be.

(continued Monday night) Her mother wouldn't let her go. About 6 people didn't come.. Mike brought Wheatly to the Duba's party [*New sheet of paper with Snoopy dancing, thinking "If you can't dance, you should at least be able to do a happy hop!] and told Chris that he was bring W. to his party too. Chris said "Oh, no you're not!" Anyway Mike and Caroline (Kenny wasn't there) arrived at 8:00 p.m. and left at 8:10 p.m. for 10 minutes they said. They came back at 10:30 p.m. with Caroline dragging Wheatly by the hand (she seems to be taking a great interest in W and Mike with some girl (Joan maybe?). Chris said they had to go - (ha,ha,ha) and Caroline stormed out in a rage! Mike apologized and followed. WOW.

I wore the midi - peachy colored stretchy one - with a scarf and my hair in a bun at the back of my neck. Chris was very impressed - loved (underlined) the midi and (underlined) the hair - said that I looked very dignified. I was, of course, pleased!

OOH! That bum Jorge T. had the nerve to tell Chris that he was attracked to me and then had the gall to ask me to go out with him! I was so flabbergasted that I just gasped and said "Maybe!". He's calling on Wednesday to find out for sure. I am going to say "No, Jorge, I really don't want to go out with you!" and I don't care what he says to that!

If only it had been someone decent! (underlined) Why do I (underlined) attract all the slime? I must be masochistic because I never go to pains to be nice to him (underlined) - he doesn't expect or deserve it! At least I danced with Chris a lot - compared to Jorge, Chris is absolutely GORGEOUS! And he gave me a very nice goodbye kiss on the cheek.

[now on a sheet with Linus telling Charlie Brown "No problem is so big or so complicated that it can't be run away from!]

I guess all my trivia and gossip must seem very ridiculous to you - the world traveler - I really envy you. I've been putting it off - trying to forget but I must say something about SCHOOL! Today I was all smiles & hellos until third period by which time I'd seen everyone and was ready to leave for another 3 months! My schedule -

Wld. Hist. Geo. Schindeler - with Liz & Terry Geometry - Miller - with Jenny - denise & snif would be you! English - Ryan with everybody plus - & you! French Hutschinson with no-one. Health-Gym - thomson-Litton (!) with no-one Spanish - Senora with Gale, Liz & YOU!

If you were here we'd have 3 classes together! I have told all those teachers that you were in Iran - only Senora even seemed to hear and was very impressed.

I don't like French - I may switch to typing after all. I don't like having 1/2 a class of eighth graders. If I do I'll have Gym and Typing with Liz - I think. We are sharing lockers again on the third floor.

Miller is a creep. We had 10 problems for homework. Lindy & Rick & Mike M. are in my class - . All in all I had 4 homework assignments. Thomson is even worse! Mrs. Ryan is overefficient but very nice.

I have Roy in Spanish again - poor Senora - just what she needs at the end of the day. Poor Senora is right! Diane E. (former 9th grader - last year) was killed Saturday - hit by a car - Senora must have liked her - was very upset. Plus she lost a big wallet full of unreplaceable very important papers on Friday.

[Now on a page with a picture of the curly haired girl saying "People always expect more of you when you have curly hair!] Was probably stolen. getting too tired to write full sentences (Me) - not senora)

If I take French I next year I can be sure not to have people younger than me! We didn't have to go in for 2 days of testing after all - they're going to do that on the 16th & 17th. Now that I'm back at the miserable place I wish we could get to work. I hate the - settling down period the first few weeks. OH! I am used to waking up at 11:00a.m. it's not 11:34 pm will finish in morning - .

Tuesday morning I woke up at 7:30 this morning and burst into tears. I am writing this in my homeroom. Gale isn't even in my homeroom anymore. We've been adopted by a little striped kitten. My parents want to get rid of him - but he keeps hanging around. Two days after you left - some people came around looking for a 1/2 grown gray cat with a red collar. Anastasia had gone but my father found a red collar - Everybody (family) is going down to see Liza's land today - I wish they'd done it before we went back to school - would have given us a day of vacation from Rose. How's bucket by the way?

Today is Bridget's birthday - yesterday was Blair's - They're going to celebrate this weekend. Blair got a very nice television (underlined) from his godmother - slightly used. Bridget got $50 credit in any store she wants! I wish I (underlined) had a godmother like that. Her main claim to fame is that she was JFK's mistress! I forgot to bring back that yellow packet they always give us - I couldn't get your schedule as they don't deliver your mail anymore - I guess they'll send it on to you. All I want to do is go home and go to bed... Liz was still in bed at 8:10 when Jenny went by her house - We have a 4 day weekend this week - I can't wait. I wish that school started at 10:00 a.m. Liza is leaving Thursday. I have a dentist appointment on Friday. Only one (underlined) more year until I get out of here - Ah!

I saw Betsy walking to the bus stop in jeans! I wonder if they can wear them or she was going to change. Did I tell you about Dorsey McD? He was at Chris's party. His family is very rich. He goes to school in Conneticut. He isn't even as snobbish as Alex and Chris! He brought 2 guitars to the party - a 12 string folk and a classical - He was excellent in both - it made me want to burn my guitar! Barbara wants me to teach her some chords - that made me feel a little better!

I am so lonely - I wish you were here! Mrs. Ryan said yesterday that she always waits a few days before dropping off the names of people that moved. She said army people often just travel around and end up coming back - I tried to convince her that you were gone for good. Boo-hoo! Today it is cool after a cold wave swept in yesterday. I hope it stays cool.

I hate homeroom - at least I have time to write. All I can think about is school - being stuck here. I feel like I have to stay up late at night to get the most use of my time. I would end this letter but then I'd have nothing to do. I didn't have any breakfast this morning - oh dear I have third lunch.... We are going to be doing Mythology in English. Now I am in Wld History sitting in the cafeteria across from Liz I guess I'll end now. PLEASE WRITE Love, Hilary

Heathrow Airport Aug. 27 or 28 Mushroom stationery

Dear Hilary, Well, here the tale of Kathy Talley in London ends, alas. After being lazy, I'll have to remember what I've done in the last three days. I've spent ALL my money, and I dont know where the hell it's all gone. I bought B. a little £1.9.6 thingy at Harrods, I bought you a thingy at Selfridges for £4.19.6 (forgetting a pound is more than a dollar), and various items for Gale--all of which I will send eventually.

Monday we went to Mme. Tussauds, it was very interesting, but the Chamber of Horrors wasn't so awful - what was most interesting was Robspierre's head, and that of Marie Antoinette. They were made from casts of the real heads. Upstairs were the penny gambling machines - it is funny to see a little girl standing on tiptoe to reach the handle of a one armed bandit. In the "Heroes - Live" hall they had "El Cordobés" being gored by a bull, David Frost, the Beatles, Twiggy, Charles, De gaulle etc. The Kings & Queens were the most interesting to me - oh! they had Lord Byron, but not Shelley or Keats. They had the Shah of Iran - and all the Kings & some Queens of England - all six wives of Henry VIII, Jane Grey, & Oliver Cromwell.

Speaking of Cromwell, we went to see the movie "Cromwell" that night. I dont think you'd like it, but Gale would. The King of France in "The Lion in Winter" was the same person as Prince Rupert in "Cromwell." That is for Gales benefit, if she remembers it. It (Cromwell) was a very good movie. We came on a crowded night because the seats were 22/ or $2.64.

Tuesday we went to the Tate Gallery, and I saw a lot of William Blake, and 3 drawings by Aubrey Beardsley. William Blake was great - I dont have a grudge against him after Mr. Kay. [Based on a 6th grade class report on Blake and Wagner.] Also I loved the Pre-Raphealites. They were people who believed in the life of the Middle Ages - and I can agree with the way they depicted it. Alas! My words are pitifully inadequate - I only wish I could go back home and tell you about everything.

After the Tate Gallery we went on a boat ride to Richmond 2 1/2 hours. Since it was low tide we could see nothing but the banks. Richmond is a nice town - I would like to live in the old part, and take a train to London whenever I pleased.

Wednesday was Kathy's day by herself. I tried to find Biba's, but couldn't, so I went to the Kensington Market. They had old 30's dresses - but rather expensive, and Indian clothes, beautiful, but expensive too. I bought a pair of Roman sandals for £3 - I thought I might send them to you, but since I had already bought you a something or other, which doesn't match anything I have - I decided to selfishly keep them.

Afterwards I went to Westminster Abbey, and looked at all the tombs. There was a memorial to Keats & Shelley [drawing of memorial] - Nothing to Byron. The tombs to the Royalty were interesting. Though I am under sixteen I had to pay the Adult price to get in - they couldn't believe that I'm only fourteen. Lady Jane Grey's mother had dates carved all over her - some like 1749, a long time ago!

There was Queen Elizabeth & Bloody Mary, Prince (King) Edward, oh everyone. In the Abbey Bookshop I bought a paperback set of the Narnia Chronicles - like Gales set of the Trilogy. I thought I might give it to Gale - but again, I'm afraid, I was selfishly inclined.

After wandering aimlessly looking for a bustop I left for Hampstead. There I saw Keats's house. It was very interesting, and the house was very pretty. I bought a book there, "Keats Shelley & Rome." I talked to the caretaker of the house, and we were talking about Keats & Shelley, and how (well) much they knew each other. THAT I enjoyed. For the last 3 hours I just rode around London in a bus - we had tickets where you can ride the bus, underground, and tube free. The tickets cost money, though.

We left London this morning, and are in Frankfurt now. We have spent a lovely 45 min. in Alemagne - in a very sterile, EMPTY, airport - not very representative, I'm sure. Steve had the window out from London, but I have it now. Not much more to say - maybe in 7 hrs. or so we'll be in our new home town. Sigh. Love, Kathy

How was Luba & Duga Duba's party?
