Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often. Last year, Kathy and Hilary got together and reread their letters. They thought they were funny and hoped others might think so too. They propose to post alternating installments of these 32-year-old letters when they get around to it. We promise not to clean up mispellings, bad grammar, or silly opinions.

Hilary to Kathy, October 17, 1970, Arlington, VA
Saturday Oct 17, 1970

Dear Kathy,

Please forgive me for not writing these past two weeks - Its just as well because I have felt very depressed and would only be gloomy - (I think I'll write on every other line)

Today Barbara and I got dropped off at Central Library about 11:00 a.m. - then we walked home via Hot Shoppes. After that my mother took us to Woodward & Lothrops to look at boots. We found some nice ones but I just couldn't make up my mind. So we walked all over looking around and finally decided to get some really wild sued oxford type shoes with crepe soles but they didn't have the right size. So we went to the Hahns in Clarendon. They had a pair that were ½ a size too small and some in the wrong color - (they come in brown & tan, blue & gray, burgundy & gray - I wanted brown & tan) So then we got some in plain brown - sort of juvenile though in an acceptable way - also with crepe soles. Then I started having second thoughts about some crinkle patent ones I had seen at Hechts. They are brown, one eyelet - lace-up with crepe soles. So after dinner my father drove me over there and he went ahead and wrote a check for them. Now I have to return the others to Hahns. All this indicision is making me terribly upset - indicision always does that to me. We finally decided to wait a while to get some boots.

Bridget is spending the weekend in Bristol Virginia - she's looking at Intermont College - She actually wants to go there! It is a small girls school, colonial architecture, for not very bright people. I think she's taking the easy way out - and just wants to lead a sheltered, stuck away life. Phooey on her!

At least she has plans - Alex isn't even worrying about college! He finally got his Nikon - though he doesn't have a lens and has the cheapest prism possible. Now that he has a Nikon, Jorge T. And he are the best of friends - Jorge the Nikon fan - Jorge came over the other night with a whole bag full of expensive equipment - Alex nearly drooled to death.

Chris took me to see "Anne of the Thousand Days" last night. I'm afraid I'm fickle - only a few months ago I would have been thrilled - now I find Chris a drag. He's too much of a snob. And now that I have attracted more attention in the "set" I think he's just trying to show off. Ken asked Alex and Chris if I was going to last nights football game. Chris told him that I was going out with him. I could kill Chris! I would much rather have gone to the football game with Ken. Straight though Ken may be, I like him much better. I saw him at the library week before last and nearly killed myself walking to the library at every opportunity in hopes of seeing him again. I may give up and just call him next week and casually ask if he's going to the game, could he give me a lift? I wonder - if Ken ever does start running around with me - will I stop liking him too? God, I hope not - I should be just like Henry VIII.

If I didn't tell you before - Caroline dropped Ken long ago - causing him great agony - and was running around with Mike for a few months. Apparently she got too serious and Mike dumped her only recently (remember Diane?) Now Ken doesn't want Caroline anymore - he gave up - Nobody wants Caroline in fact - she is socially dead. Though I detect a definite interest in Caroline's plight on Chris's part - who knows? He may really like her in which case he could start up with her and leave me free. The thing is I am free - it is just that Chris sees all these people each day and I don't - so he can project any image of me that he wants. OH- I hate having to be bothered with such dreadful teenage trivialities - Why doesn't someone handsome and charming fall in love with me and save me from further worry.

Too bad about Leslie and Cal - I hope their breaking up was not Lorraine's doing? Maybe you will find someone with dark hair and pale skin that you like to fall in love with you - what sugar sweet dreams I have - aren't they revolting...

At least I have Ken to have crushes on me (heaven forbid I should have a "crush" on anybody). It doesn't sound as if you have spotted anybody appealing. I admire Anne Boleyn greatly - I should be as noble as she - and always speak what I mean - when have you ever known me to be either one of those?

It has gotten cold in the past few days - really lovely and chilly - I like wearing woolen pants and sweaters - I hope you don't have to have the climate hot all year? How wretched - but you said in your last letter that it was going into the '70's there.

WOW - I just remembered - Alex told me that yesterday he was walking home when Pam & Alicia P. And a friend drove by and pulled over to talk for a minute. The friend said that he had seen me in California and his description sort of fits that of Peter K. - Imagine Peter K. In Arlington! If I were him I would stay in San Francisco and never come back to this dump.

We got the right to wear pants and jumpsuits and shorts whenever we want to school. Now the teachers are trying to get permission to wear pantsuits to school. Senora wore one on Friday. The pants were really hideous - very tight at the ankles - yechh!

I got an A on my English report on Mythology - a little more than I expected - Fortuneatly Ryan is an easy grader - Monday we got into gym for the first time - OH! TERROR! Miss Litton is supposed to be really terrible. Nevertheless I hate Thomson so much - I can almost stand the thought. She hates me now - I can tell - especially after I got my way and transferred into 4th period.

I just gave Alex a big lecture on how he cared more about the camera than the pictures you could get from it - I accused him of having no creativity. He was giving me a lot of crap about having to get the best camera possible before you can worry about taking pictures. Well! We'll see about that!

Continued on Sunday. Now I'm watching "The White Cliffs of Dover". I heard the poem on WGMS read by Irene Dunne who stars in the movie. Civilisation is now being played on channel 26 as the Forsyte Saga has ended. I don't know if they'll play it again or not.

Yecchh! Pehog is trying to sit in my lap and his skin is worse than ever. Oh Dear - Irene Dunnes husband was just killed. My father hasn't attempted to get me to go on a rally since the last night rally. Just as well that he doesn't. Nevertheless he still takes every chance to show the Stopwatcher to all friends and relatives.

I took your picture to school last week - everybody noticed that your hair had been cut. Your right about the girls here - they are all in that ugly straggly process of growing their hair out.

I've been getting in the habit of having a whole mound of pancakes for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. I'm sure to gain 10 lbs!

Now I'm watching "The First Men on the Moon" the H.G. Wells one.

Now that I have some comfortable shoes I can walk to the library more often - OH By the way - that's the only reason I got any new shoes at all was because I don't have any really comfortable shoes - not for walking anyway - that's why I got crepe soles shoes - I know you really CARE why I got a new pair of shoes but.... it's a very dull weekend!

Melissa wore a midiskirt last week - so did Linda O. - I have yet to get up the courage to wear one. I am making one that buttons all the way up and down so I think I'll wait until it's finished - somehow that seems a little less harsh. It was easier when I could be sure of someone else wearing a midiskirt the same day -

OH WELL, I really haven't got anything else to say - so, Love, Luck & Lollipops! (Yecch!) P.S. write soon - I will tell Gale to do the same.
