Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, September 30, 1971, Arlington, VA
September 30, 1971

Dear Kathy –

I know I haven’t written in a month and a half – I only BEG forgiveness. Please don’t think I’ve excommunicated you – I haven’t! I wrote to you after receiving your last – at the end of August I think. In it I exclaimed that you had gone on with F. even after that whole Doris Day speech! Truly I don’t hold it against you – Frankly I envy your experience. I hope I’m not too late in offering some advice. DON’T worry about it not being great – I’m afraid I haven’t experience to judge by but I should think after 15 years of abstaining from sex (and 5 of knowing what IT was!) you can’t be expected to be Super Sexy Person in one easy lesson. Please write and tell how the situation has changed and hopefully improved.

I have so much to tell! I’ll try and be brief. – I got an A on my final exam in Alg.-Trig – a B for the course – SHOCK OF SHOCKS! Not a bad or useless waste of summer I’d say! Now that the torture is long over, I am truly pleased with myself! Taking that course has proved to be ULTRA-USEFUL! I’ll explain – This year I started French I – So my schedule is like this – SPANISH 4 ENGLISH FRENCH BIOLOGY STUDY HALL GYM Thanks to summer school I have a study hall to do all my tons of homework – But – I was elected President of my Homeroom and with my 1st victory (or attempt of that sort ever), got POWER HUNGRY and decided to run for Soph. Senator in the Sophomore Elections. There are 4 class officers (for each class – Senior, Junior, Soph.) and the SCA has a President, first and second Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian and 2 Senators from each class as well. I didn’t want to run for a sophomore office in which I’d have to work with other soph.’s so I chose Senator. I gave my speech yesterday (the 1st of my whole life!). Today is the primary election and if I get 50% or more I’m automatically in, otherwise we vote again in a runoff tomorrow. ZOWIE! I think I may win too! Charlie Slater was my campaign manager and Shauna A. ran for Vice Pres. So we combined efforts on making posters. You wouldn’t believe how social I’ve become with some of the most repulsive of “cliques” to get votes. Remaining radical all of the time of course.

I’m also looking into the Youth Council – Shanna B. is Pres. Super gross!

You haven’t heard of the New School yet so I will tell you. Arlington is getting so progressive! This year they took an old, abandoned elementary school (Woodlawn) and started a New School for 11th & 12th grade volunteers from the 3 High Schools. Everything & Everybody is very relaxed – the idea is INDEPENDENT STUDY: progressive teaching, small classes that meet 2 or 3 times a week. Blair is going there and loves it – he may want to apply for next year. This being the first year they werelow on volunteers – Next year they will probably have to use a lottery system.

The lack of appealing males at Stratford was so crucial that having arrived at W&L, Shauna and I have gone wild, finding MR. NIFTIES – there are so many gorgeous people around here, all I do all day is look at them. Kathy Save me! I’m becoming a TYPICAL teenager – and enjoying it. Et toi?
