Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, October 1, 1971, Arlington, VA

The Kennedy Center recently opened.

Continued Saturday, Oct. 1. I won! [the student center campaign] I had to wait & tell you before I mailed this. There was a runoff – between me & Rick W. (gross clique type from Stratford). Patty S. – gorgeous redhead type from Kenmore (also much more student govt. oriented than myself and long time member of Youth Council) won in the primary so I got nervous having to fight for the last seat. Shauna won s V.P. too – so all is happy. Talk about TYPICAL! I have been to 2 football games – found that almost all of my gorgeous people that I see in the halls are there. One in particulare – a certain Bob G. – was President of the Junior class last year – gave upon govt. this year to be Captain of the basketball team. From the first time I saw him I liked him because he looks so RELAXED! He has gorgeous long blond hair and wire frame glasses – Whenever I see him in the halls & manage to sidle up to him he’s humming! Super relaxed, sensitive type – ANYWAY, there is a guy in my Spanish class named Oscar L. (from somewhere in South America) who also plays basketball and by close observation it became apparent that Oscar and bob are the best of friends. We saw them at last week’s football game and spent ½ the time looking at them instead of the field. ANYWAY – Bill C. wanted to take Shauna to the game but she didn’t want to go with him and said maybe she’d see him there. We did see him there and were suffering in agony when the lights went out – We took the opportunity and RAN! When we relocated ourselves after ½ time we were sitting very close (right behind actually) Oscar! But Bob wasn’t there and we’d seen him with a girl so we didn’t get thrilled. But I nearly died when Bob started coming – without the girl! – our way and had a fit when he sat down RIGHT NEXT TO ME! Apparently Oscar and the whole group in front of us were with him – Anyway, the feeling is one of TOTAL bliss.

And being a senator I stand out from other spastic sophomores. I have great hopes for this year!!!

Also a gorgeous person is Peter T. – only a junior – super-jock-only not the high school type jock but the Harvard – LOVE STORY type jock. He’s on the football team – sits right across from us at lunch – But I never see him in the halls – sob –

And many others – Ah well – so far High School is better than I thought – Alex may be disgusted but I will not be a typical, apathetic slob the way he was.

He, by the way, is at Northern Virginia Community College – and likes it well enough.

SAD NEWS – MewMew passed away a few weeks ago. Cause of death unknown. We felt guilty because we never gave him all the attention he craved.

MILESTONES – We now have a German Shepherd named Samantha. Abbey C. (formerly Mrs. R.C) is running around with a guy at the STAR named George G. – Anyway, she gave us her two German Shepherds for him – one of them to us. “Sam” (also – Tsen, Stan, Pam, Tan – Alex is fulfilling his quota of names as he used to do for cats) is 6 years old, very small, beige colored with a black back and very affectionate. She’s MY DOG but the whole family has become very attached.

I have kept on at my job at Groom’s – now I am paid $12.50 a week – not bad eh, especially considering that I got the raise illegally during the WAGE-PRICE freeze put on by Nixon. – You must have heard of it. I just take the school bus to the office & afterwards walk to the R’s and call for a ride

Which reminds me that Bridget is very happy at K.U. - has a terrible roommate who is oversexed and stays up till all hours of the early morning. I wanted to go there for homecoming next weekend, but probably won’t.

The Kennedy Center has been open for a while now – my parents seem to go there at least once a week. Even so, they both maintain that the place is cheap and gaudy – and it is not REALLY for the “little” people because it is too expensive.

I went there for the Ballet Premiere – and to see the opera BEATRIX CENCI – I enjoyed both. I also love talking to reporters & photographers. I met Julius Rudel – saw all sorts of others including Gregory Peck.

I met Julius Rudel.

So I’d say the building itself is a big, ugly white elephant on the river but it is nice to have a “home for the arts” right next door. Especially for ballet, because I love ballet – the American Ballet Theater has its home here now. I loved the ballet done to a work called THE RIVER by Duke Ellington – Anyway – we’re going today to see Giselle –

Again please forgive and be sure that I hold nothing against you. I hope you’re feeling more sure of yourself now – I DO want to hear Everything NEW!!

PLEASE WRITE!! Love, Hilary
