Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, November 4, 1971, Arlington, VA
Monday, Nov. 4, 1971 Dear Kathy, today I am at home with a cold. BLAH, the winter weather arrived last week with a cold slap! We didn’t have a very good autumn – the weather was okay until all the leaves began to fall and it rained. All the leaves were pulled into wet, brown clumps. So we missed all the glorious changing colors.

Alex smashed his Instamatics with a sledgehammer.

Last Friday was the big Homecoming game. I actually worked on the sophomore float! Mr. Franklin is our class sponsor – He’s really nice – Quinton Randolph Franklin – from the South – divorced too – Anyway, he was driving the convertible which was pulling the float and he told Shauna and me to get in and ride around the track with it. Mike M. (Pres. Of the soph. Class, no less – very typical!) was in front. It was quite humiliating…. After the game we went to a party – the first party I’ve been to since school started. It was much different from Alex’s parties – overflowing with Booze & Sex! At any rate it was a shock to me – but fun. I grabbed a senior named David G. – he’s a basketball player (tall!) kind of dumb but very sweet.

All the seniors are grabbing soph. Girls – the senior girls just sit around killing time – I tremble to think of being a has-been at 17 – However, I will leave to find new horizons or something to that effect.

Saturday I went to a party that I’d rather forget. It was small, dull – everybody was drunk or stoned or making out and the people were all the pseudo-radical hippie set – David was at basketball practice but I’m sure he wouldn’t have been there anyway. I guess I still lean to the slightly sugar-coated, middle class set. Ah well, it was a depressing evening. Enough! Somebody tell me to forget it, please! I have decided to pursue only super-jocks this season!

I’m supposed to go to the PTA meeting tonight with the other SCA members. Apparently the PTA hates the SCA and always ends up throwing us out. Goody, I can hardly wait. Last year some woman got so mad she grabbed Jim G. by the collar and slapped his face.

Alex has actually gotten a job – selling Instamatics at Tyson’s Corner – quite ironic since catching camera fever last year – he smashed his own Instamatic with a sledgehammer. If you recall how fabulous he looked when he lost 40 lbs. 2 years ago – he’s gone all the way back up – it started last year when he was hit by the Senior Slump. I don’t see him that often, really. Sometimes we get along fabulously, but sometimes I only seem to antagonize him. Very depressing, but I pay no heed – because it’s his fault for not being happy. Hmm? You never mention Steve or Bucket – both huge by now I guess. More to come....
