Hilary to Kathy, November 4, 1971 cont., Arlington, VA Dear Kathy cont.
My father just got a promotion from City Editor to Assistant Managing Editor in charge of Cultural Affairs – shockingly (it sounds so limited) it’s a very large dept. at the Star.
James Taylor tickets sold out at the Kennedy Center before we could get any.
I want to go visit Chris (CRASS) in Boston during Thanksgiving. He’s going to Boston University in case I forgot to mention it. I found this summer that I like him in spite of all that garbagy (GARBAGY – like garbage??) façade he puts up. At any rate I want to get away!!!
We wanted to come to Teheran during the grand celebration. Needless to say we didn’t and couldn’t afford it.
I really enjoy French – it’s easy after taking Spanish and it makes me want to move to Europe more than ever. I am in Spanish 4 now, but this year the teacher is so bad I’m afraid I won’t learn much. It’s all right I guess, if I learn French pretty well.
You would do fabulously well if you had my English teacher this year – he would adore you (he hates me except that he thinks I’m not a total loss because I’m in SCA). He is SO traditional. He expects us to have read or to be reading all sorts of classics, and writing literary genius to be put in the school magazine. You KNOW that I’m a terrible reader, and I’m too impatient to write anything.
I’ll send you a school picture if I can find one – they are terrible as usual.
James Taylor was at the Kennedy Center recently – I’ll never forgive myself for not acting on getting tickets before they sold out.
I’m glad I ran for senator – I never would have dared a few years ago. I think I’m really coming out of the shell that I build around myself starting in 5th grade. Now I worry about being selfish, immature and stupid – and even if I’m not an acute case so many other people everywhere are. Blah, today I am reflecting too much and getting discouraged. Hope I haven’t bored you.
By the way, IranZamin sounds very interesting – a fantastic opportunity to meet people and it sounds like Americans re in the minority. Quite an experience for the average (or not so average) American. I hope you are doing well and enjoying yourself. And John? And your riding?
In other words, Please Write!
Love, Hilary
P.S. Blair nicknamed me Hilabelle – it’s as popular as your Ant Hil!
