Kathy to Hilary, June 11, 1972, Tehran, Iran, cont. Nixon was here a week or two ago, needless to say we didn’t go to see him. It interfered with my siesta.
Nixon was here a week ago.
Since we had a half-holiday I thought it ought to be spent doing something pleasant. Iran is an important country because of its oil and it’s strategic position bordering the USSR. That's why we're here. (You were wondering, weren't you?)
Everyone says Iran is the USA’s puppet and it looks an awful lot like it because Nixon got an extravagant welcome like no other visiting head of state. Willy Brandt was here not too long ago and we hardly knew it. There were a few bombings as a result of Nixon’s visit and Mother wouldn’t let me out of the house, being afraid they would get any Americans they happened to see running around. Remember the black clouds over Washington in ’68? [After Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination.] Oh, and tell me, who’ll be President--Nixon? I guess he’ll win because the Democrats are so divided.
I don’t really care.
