Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, March 18, 1972, Arlington, VA
March 18, 1972

Dear Kathy,

I have been meaning to write for so long – believe it or not I started a letter last week but as usual I didn’t finish it and I can’t bear to send unfinished letters. I have to finish a letter in one sitting or it never gets sent. Anyway, the arrival of your letter yesterday displayed the obvioys (oops) solution – type it! I was very glad to hear from you!

It’s that time of year again – actually just one of the many times of year…. But surely you remember what it’s like here in March, when spring ought to be here but isn’t. It looks beautiful but even though it’s not freezing it’s not gloriously warm either. It won’t be until May. Blah, in any case everyone is in the mood for Spring if it ever deigns to come.

I have been so painfully busy in the last few months of winter that I case spring signifies a rest. I have been working at Groom plus working on our Student Educational Seminar at school after school. (hmmm!) I got so behind at Groom that I get fed up and now I’m not working there anymore. I never really quit, and they never really fired me but I’m not working in any case. Everybody seems to think I’ll go back but I don’t really want to.

A glamorous after-school job

Although the work and the experience are much better than what most kids can get I hate the job and I’m sick of the people. I think when I’m 16 (and we both know how close that is!) I can get a job as a salesgirl. I don’t want to work at Hecht’s or anything like that. The only reason I consider it is because a friend of the A’s thinks that he can get Shauna & me jobs on Connecticut ave. or Georgetown in the Britches or Joe’s Place. In any case I need money! Also, Mr. Franklin the soph. Class sponsor said we might be able to get jobs at the Smithsonian this summer in the Insect Zoo. If I don’t work this summer there is a 4 wk. seminar at Mary Washington College where you can work on dance, music, Writing and all sorts of fun things for only $155. Well, it could be fun…
