Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, March 18, 1972, cont., Arlington, VA
I don’t know how to accept your news about F., but if you’re not unhappy I’m not either. I couldn’t be, not having known him. I guess I’m kind of glad to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t believe in long drawn out love Affairs.

I broke up with Oscar just a little while ago even though we’d only been going out since Christmas. I am sending the school newspaper which has a picture of my basketball-baby in it. Did I tell you that he was co-captain of the basketball team and sports editor of the yearbook? And he’s not even your typical jock. He gets fantastic grades in AP courses and wants to go to Princeton or Rice! He’s also very sweet and considerate, has nice friends, good taste in music, plays the guitar… Don’t think I regret dumping him (only on Friday nights) I guess I just wasn’t ready for that kind of security. He even had a nice Austin America! But it was really boring and I found myself being shitty and mean and I couldn’t go on like that. Even if he is 6’2” and has a fantastic bod! My parents found him kind of mediocre I think – me too. I am sorry to bore you like this. Everybody keeps asking me why I did it. I think you may be the only one to understand.

Also in the newspaper is an article by me but don’t be shocked by the bad quality—those are not my words! They edited it to death. The seminar described was organized by Patty S. my co-senator. I was the coordinator for the Women’s Liberation seminars. Patty thought up the seminar as an SCA project to save our good name and have something to do, but they are too apathetic to help and we ended up doing it ourselves. My week had some good speakers but the groups were all really small—it is so hard to open up the minds of the kids at W-L. They would rather go home and sleep and the jocks have practice.

Teaching classmates about Women's Lib

At least I got some really interesting ideas and thoughts from the seminars. Are you into that at all? I never realized how programmed my life has been toward female oppression. I won’t do anything militant or change my behavior but I appreciate the opportunity to think some new thoughts on the question of women.
