Kathy to Hilary, September 16, 1972, Tehran, Iran September 15 or 16, 1972
Dear Hilary,
(Sorry about the pencil, but I couldn’t find a pen and was too lazy to go upstairs.) I guess school has started for you too by now--we’ve been at it about a week. I was surprized on the first day of school to find out that I wasn’t registered--nice surprize--so I missed a day trying to get the mess sorted out.
Back at school.
In the last week I’ve had to drop German in favor of Spanish and get a dumber history teacher (I liked last year’s even though I nailed the other one on some minor inaccuracy involving Byron’s death in Greece--there are problems in being super-informed on some subjects--I’ve about dragged the subject of Keats, Shelley, and Byron to death. What will be next?)
I heard you spent some time in New York--much fun, I guess. The family has unanimously decided that we ought to get stationed in Fort Monmouth, N.J.. The next step is to convince the Army that we ought. I don’t care much, but New Jersey is close to New York (advantages in that need not be explained, I think) and to England. Everyone’s decided that I ought to go to Oxford, but Oxford. Somehow I’ll let them know that I would be a valuable student--but in what, I haven’t decided. My parents want me to be a Journalist, but I’m not pushy enough for that. (Aren’t journalists pushy? I guess you would know about that because of your papa.)
Furthermore, Johnny’s decided to follow me to England or precede me, rather, so I can’t go to some American college. Not that I choose to. I don’t know why I’m renouncing the American Way of Life. After all, it is my Vaterland, for all I’ve lived there. New Jersey is also close to Washington--though there is no reason I should feel attached to that place, although there are people there that I would visit if they remember me. (Remember me? If you do, write!) Have we been here two years already? It seems either 2,000 or two months.
