Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, July 12, 1972, Arlington, VA

Besides that I’ve been watching the Democratic Convention & all and it’s such a farce! It’s ridiculous & I have no faith now in politics or politicians. The games! The slander! The theatrical performances! Although he’s no solution, I like McGovern better than the rest – And as I may have mentioned before, if I don’t get a job (very soon!) I will volunteer to work for him.

Shirley Chisholm, Democratic Convention 1972

Oh – I only had to take 2 exams – Good for a Soph. (In English & Bio) I actually got an A on my English exam – 2 hour long essays – yuck. I’m taking AP English next year & my lazy soul dreads the piles of work. Ugh. I really am getting incredibly lazy. Anyway, my final grades were AAABB – so I’m pretty well satisfied.

Bridget, Mac & April arrived July 1st for a month (AARGH!) They’ve both graduated from Sonoma State. The M’s gave them a graduation gift of $5000 – Which marks an end to their financial aid. Anyway, they bought an old car to drive back across the country.

I was shocked and quite unhappy to learn that the P’s (who live in your house) are separating. I always thought they were the perfect couple. Mr. P built a room out of the side porch and now is making a master bedroom in the attic. But now he’s just going to sell the house when he’s finished. Mrs. P.’s the one who’s leaving w/Holcomb – their son and my favorite kid to babysit for.

Your Baccalaureate program next year sounds like a real bitch. I wish you luck and endurance. I envy your international set – it sounds interesting – really! One gets so tired of Arlingtonians, Virginians & Americans in General. DO tell the story of how K.T. was transformed into a social butterfly at a school dance – It sounds quite original!!

Maybe I’ll meet a shipping magnate in Greece! Maybe I’ll stay there, marry him & then divorce & get the alimony to put me through college! WOW! As you can surely tell it is getting late & I am getting Punchy! But this time DO write back quickly! W/love, Hilary

George McGovern
