Kathy to Hilary, October 31, 1972, Tehran, Iran October 31, 1972
Dear Hilary:
Happy Halloween! Just a quick card to say I hope you don’t get eaten by the Skull Moon! I’m leaving in a few minutes for a school fair--I’m going to wear my tribal earrings and scarves and long skirt and be a gypsy and tell fortunes with my Tarot cards. Remember how freaked our Melissa was when she got the Hanged Man? Or were you in that class?
Jan has been in Afghanistan for a few days, everyone kept asking when he was coming back. I didn’t really know what day it would be, so it was a great surprize when he finally returned. It’s still such a joy to look at him and be with him, but the school, in it’s petty tyranny, has forbidden us to hang out together. All we can do is pass notes.

Apparently all this western-style “smuggering” shocks some of the teachers and a majority of the parents that come to the school. They say we are a bad example for the little kids at the school. But I think it can only be a good thing. They are attempting to stamp out love because of the demands of the narrow minded culture. But then all churches and social institutions are oppressive. “O children of a future age, when reading this indignant page, know that in a former time, love sweet love was thought a crime.” [Blake]

I can’t believe that our most popular war may soon be coming to an end. Of course, it’s only an election trick, isn’t it. No ending the war until now, notice. We can all guess who’ll be sitting enthroned in the white mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue after two weeks--and it’s not fair! How can the American people be so blind and re-elect Nixon! What if they elected Nobody like the Yippies or whoever are saying?
Bucket wishes she could go trick or treating and doesn’t want to wait until she gets back to the “nighty states.” She says she wants to be a princess. What do you want to be? Won’t you write and tell me?
Love,
KAT
