Hilary to Kathy, November 8, 1972, Arlington, VA November 8, 1972 (day of sickness)
Dear Kathy,
I am determined to get a letter to you (even if I do fail my government test on the morrow). As usual – I really am sorry to have been silent for so long –
Maybe your mother has told you (via mine) that I am going to (try to) graduate this year instead of next. W-L is a disgusting school (it’s the most conservative – and that’s school board POLICY for God’s sake) and 2 yrs. Is more than enough. The kids are conservative too – and while most of them are just dumb – some are truly repulsive – although they’re probably just reacting to their environment.
Anyway – you know how truly lazy I am… I let myself be talked into taking four Advanced Placement Courses (thanks to my counselor). So I am taking AP English 11 & 12, AP U.S.& VA History, AP Government, Physics, French II – Spanish will have to wait awhile.
I really love my senior classes. They aren’t more work – actually the teachers credit us w/intelligence and spare the shitwork. Those are good AP courses. The junior AP courses are piles of shit! Boring work – it’s supposed to be delving into the subject except the teachers know what they want and all the great ideas we could have are worth NOTHING if they aren’t the ideas of our teachers. But that’s W-L.

Anyway – If I live through it I can go to college next year – YAY! WHAT college I don’t know… I love Dartmouth or Oberlin- but what w/high prices & high competition I’ll be lucky to get into William and Mary.

All of this means that within six weeks of each other – I get to take the PSAT, SAT, ACT, tests on 3 weekends – and because I won’t have time to take them again before I send in my applications – I’d better do DAMN Well…. Sob!
