Hilary to Kathy, November 8, 1972, cont., Arlington, VA You also know about our 2 weeks in Hellas (Greece) – 2 wks of accumulated homework is a lot!
We even touched on Turkey when we took a cruise – I was within a few hundred miles of IRAN! Sob Sob…. I was going to call you but it was Wed. and you would have been in school – Also the only address I have is for N.Y. so no way to have saved postage! My first time out of the U.S.! It was exciting, man (hehe). I really enjoyed it – it’s a fascinating place. All that history – there are ruins everywhere – the people are incredibly generous. My grandfather came from Isari, a SMALL town on top of an Arcadian mt. – He has always thought of it as the asshole of the world – But he left when he was young & bitter. The town is clean – perched practically on a cliff – nice houses, cafe, store, small square & that’s all.
Isari
I didn’t know it but we have relatives there and in Athens. 1st cousins to my father – One family lives in Isari – they have pictures of my great grandfather, grandfather and a portrait of my father, his sister & brothers. Really nice – they don’t speak any English – At least my grandfather & Homer do so they translated.
The Greek men reminded me of your description of Iranians. Ugh. Some nice looking ones, though, especially in Athens. Some w/blonde hair! Lots of Europeans & U.S. hippies in Athens and on Rhodes.
Oh well – I don’t want to think about it – I have told more people the same things – So I won’t bore you as well.
As for last summer & the redhead – You were right – It was a fragile affair & no damage done as he was whisked off to row in Milan, Italy just in time. I went to New York for a week – saw many things –museums, art galleries, stores (natch), people – New Yorker’s certainly can be obnoxious to each other.
