Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Hilary to Kathy, November 8, 1972, cont. Arlington, VA
Saw the P’s (for a wk) and also son Christopher who is 24 and a graduate of Goddard which he loves – he’s a teaching fellow there now. Chris is one of the nicest, most intelligent vivacious “hippies” I’ve ever met so I have renewed faith in that group – You see – now in Arlington ALL the teenyboppers dress like “hippies” – smoke pot, etc. but are the same little hypocrites underneath. Enough to make one throw away one’s jeans!

I don’t know what’s the matter w/me – I’ve had more golden opportunities for “romance” this month that I’ve passed up. 1st – a guy who was a roofer (one who repairs roofs) at W-L, and is going to be a steward for Pan-Am in December – a REAL honey – Approached me at school and my reaction was disgustingly blah. Then – Shauna & Sam (dog) and I sat in on a rugby game near the Lincoln Memorial & got asked to a party for the team at American University (where the team was from). We went, giggled by mistake, were revealed as high schoolers – and were so embarrassed by the disbelief that we left. Rugby players are GORGEOUS – (I guess actually law students & such, which they were, ARE a LITTLE old….)

Then we went to a garage sale in the neighborhood – the people there – or rather 1 person, nice looking blonde, about 22, asked me if I didn’t have a sister named Bridget. Yes? Well, he went to school with her ever since Woodmont days. Hmm. Nice looking brunette companion asks me if I wouldn’t like to come to their party that night, after the garage sale. Hmm, well, uh gee – I didn’t go. Sob! At least I know where THEY live, heh heh heh!

I guess I just can’t come up with on-the-spot charm – I’m always in shock that any of these types would even look at me.

My (hah) beloved Oscar & friend Larry are whooping it up at U. VA. This year. You remember Oscar’s beloved friend Bob. I had decided to forget him as Oscar really is such a truly good guy that I wouldn’t want to hurt him – Now, Marty tells me that Bob is miserable at A.U. and OSCAR and LARRY have resolved to get us together – Jesus! Do you suppose I’ll have better luck at college???

Poor Alex is in want of anything to do – He quit school AND work. And is sort of planning to take a motorcycle trip SOMEWHERE. Meanwhile he’s wasting his time & his savings. He says that he doesn’t want to go to school anywhere – As usual, who knows?
