Hilary to Kathy, April 3, 1973, Arlington, VA April 3, 1973
Dear Kathy,
If I had written you as many letters as I have written papers and themes for school I wouldn’t feel so guilty. Actually – all work leaves little time for play and makes Hilary a Dull Dog w/little to tell. Finally my efforts have paid off! I have been accepted to a real live COLLEGE.
William and Mary is the ONE. May not sound too exciting – I know it never did to me until I had to look for schools. It has 4500 students – very nice campus w/ lots of new buildings. Has a lake, stables, woods etc. Very well endowed – supposedly has some prestige for its age & standards & most people think it’s kind of hard to get into – Also – is state supported to it’s CHEAP! (Only $2000 a year!) Papa B. is pleased. Even if the scholarly Miss B. got accepted elsewhere I doubt that she would go. Every other place is $5000 per annum and the $3000 difference counts!
Shauna applied there – Her father is in the Navy – AND one of William & Mary’s rich trustees is an old Navy man – he wrote her a recommendation – Her grades are better than mine but her SAT’s are significantly lower – Also – she is a legal resident of New York. She’s graduating a year early as well. Anyway, she was so sure to get in that she didn’t apply anywhere else – SHE got put on a waiting list, which is almost as good (BAD) as being rejected. It’s very sad.
Another friend – you probably don’t remember her – she was a cheerleader at Stratford when we were in 8th grade (She was in 9th) Nancy B. (only recently a friend – mainly cause we share a small interest in women’s lib – tried to have a club – consciousness raising group at W-L – Didn’t work!) ex-cheerleader turned hippy was also accepted at W&M.
