Hilary to Kathy, April 3, 1973 cont., Arlington, VA POST SCRIPT
I had just finished writing, sealing & addressing a letter to you when I got YOUR letter. Funny how April is OUR month.
I was really terribly upset that you were feeling so low – Powerless as I am to help you from here – I was slightly cheered by YOUR post script but I imagine the cause of the initial depression still remains & may strike again. I know this has been the longest winter in the world for me – every other day I fall into a stupor of unhappiness. BLAH! On the other hand, this year has passed quickly – work does that… But only 9 more weeks of HELL at W-L (Rhyme!)
In any case – I was also cheered to know that I still have my only really good friend. As you have mentioned – There are acquaintances & I have some good pals (crappy word) but nobody substantial.
You’re about the only one I can really count on even if I don’t show it by writing enough. It seems I’m always begging forgiveness for my lack of communication.
If I don’t write for six months solid it’s only ‘cause I’m truly lazy & haven’t much to say. I can’t imagine anything more boring than a description of LIFE AT W-L.
Perhaps life at W&M will be more interesting.
My social live is also ZERO. Now that we have decided we’re both miserable… Why don’t you come to William & Mary next year??? You probably would be happier at Princeton – or definitely at Oxford, Trinity, etc. But if you’re hard-up – W&M’s not a bad place (says she who doesn’t even go there yet).
I would be ultra-thrilled if you got transferred to Virginia (I’m not so sure YOU would be) But if you do I will come up often to visit - & you can come down.
If you don’t come to VA. Perchance you will come to visit anyway??? We can eye the cuties at Princeton if you go to New Jersey.
As a matter of fact!! Come to Va. Or elsewhere & you could probably get into a school next year – lots of colleges take “Highly Qualified” Juniors who haven’t graduated. If you lived in Arlington you could go to American University as a day student – preferable to any of the area high schools.
In any case, as you can see, I am bubbling w/ideas.
So, Do write soon & we will plan something thrilling – Fun!
(I think perhaps the strain has gotten me)
