Kathy to Hilary, April 14, 1973 letter, Tehran, Iran You mentioned liking America and John Denver. What’s this country stuff that I keep hearing on the radio? I don’t like it much but maybe it would make more sense if I were back in the States. I’ve been listening a lot to Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes”—“going to kick it in the head when he’s 25”--traded a 2nd copy I had of Led Zepplin III and Beck Ola for an English copy a guy had. He said he doesn’t like all that kunee [queer] music, but I said I don’t mind because I like guys too!
You were talking about “Highly Qualified Juniors”—I really don’t think I’d fit that category, not with a 200 point difference between my math and verbal SAT scores (one is 0 the other is 200, ha ha ha). Gruesome ha ha’s, not funny ha ha’s. I’m hoping to redeem myself with the Achievement tests—I took Spanish, Biology, and European history. Spanish was a real farce. I think I signed up for it in a haze of madness. I really didn’t remember doing it. Last Saturday I arrived at the test center at Community School and they said I was taking the Listening-Reading thing in Spanish. I couldn’t have done worse if I’d taken Russian. At least by the laws of chance I could get 25% right, but on the Spanish one I totally misled myself, using my fantastic powers of reasoning to try to deduce the meaning of pelaquero. I wavered between a hairdresser and a fighter. I still haven’t bothered to find out what it means. The dictionary doesn’t seem to know either. If the dictionary doesn’t know, why on earth should I?
School is very irregular these days. The Seniors, including Jan, have all left to study for their Bacc’s and on the days of the Baccs that the Juniors take, no one is left at school (except for the 1-10 graders, but they don’t count). The last three days I’ve had one functioning class and I’ve been FORCED to be slothful for eight periods every day, which is naturally torture for an industrious soul like me. I was once upon a time complaining about how overworked I was. Now I’m being bored to death. Of course, I have my own Baccs coming up, so I should be studying.
