Tehran <-> Washington, DC 1970-1973 teen girl blog
Back in 1970, Hilary and Kathy were 14 years old and best friends in Washington, DC. Then Kathy moved to Tehran. They wrote to each other pretty often--and kept the letters--for your pleasure as a proto-blog from the 70s. The letters start here.

Kathy to Hilary, June 26, 1973, Tehran, Iran
Dear Hilary,

This will be a very short letter and not because I’m very busy but because I don’t have much to say. I think my parents wrote yours and told them that we know where were going to be going, but I thought I’d tell you in case you didn’t know….is it London? New York? Beirut? Paris? No…it’s Killeen, Texas!

It’s not like the Last Picture Show town—from what I gather it’s a thriving community with several movie theaters, drive-ins, and all sorts of modern conveniences for healthy and moral living. Things like churches, pizza parlors, lose-weight cheap and easy places, oh, just anything one could require. From the newspapers we had sent to us I see that there are several weddings a week including this one here that says that the groom works at the fire station and the bride—attends Nolan Junior High School. The weddings are at the Cowhouse restaurant and absolutely everything gets into the newspaper—for example, Billie Joe Bruce and Susie Mae Herring got treated to dinner in Austin last Friday night.

Naturally I didn’t think much of Tehran when I first got here, but it was a different culture at least. But Texas is just the worst of everything I remember about the States intensified. But it really won’t be too bad, I mean, it’s a large town and there are bound to be some decent people in it, right? And I can always seek consolation in Reeses Peanut Butter Cups (think they have them in Texas?) and my memories of my week in Rome.

Shelley said, “Go thou to Rome,” and speaks of graves and ruins. Shelley’s buried there and so is Keats. Mom wants to go shopping for clothes, but I don’t care too, although I do want to get a good pair of sandals. Besides Rome we’ll also spend a day in Naples. I’m trying to learn Italian, but if I don’t learn anything, I can get by on my Spanish.
