Kathy to Hilary, June 26, 1973, Tehran, Iran It’ll be hard leaving here. There’s so many things I don’t know about Iran and the people. I really regret my first year here and all the time I wasted moping about and complaining how awful it was to be exiled here. It’s not so much that there’ll be friends I’ll be sorry to leave, it’s mostly that I haven’t experienced the diversity of the people here, nor gotten a good taste of the flavor of Iran. (Corny corny) All the Iranians I know are rich and a lot of them could care less about Iran. Their aim is to leave and never come back. Which is probably a good thing for the country. Those who stay will be the ones who’ll work for a better country—and this place needs it! The others are just leeches. The corruption of our government with Watergate and everything is nothing to that of Iran’s. You would not believe the bribery, the suppression of dissent.
I’ll be sorry to leave and yet I won’t be. It’s good to go to a new place where no one knows you (and your stupid mistakes).
