Hilary to Kathy, late June 1973, Arlington, VA As for the job – I am being Royally Screwed by David’s Village Shop – Shirlington. Meaning that I work 38 hours a week (minus 4 hours for lunch) for $1.65 (minimum wage) which, minus tax, adds up to a grand total of $51.92 per week. Shirlington is DEAD – there’s a new shopping mall up the highway & half the stores in Shirlington are closed. Business is Very Slow. The shop is OK & the co-workers friendly, but considering all, I’m being screwed! Shauna works 2:30 – 6:30 in the Lyon Village Dry Cleaners & Saturdays & gets $47 a week. Nancy works 12 – 6 on weekdays & gets $3 an hour as a clerk-typist for a NY Life Insurance Agent. In other words – I get up earlier & get paid less than any other “kid on the block”.
Naturally I complain but do I quit?? $51.92 IS better than nothing…. I may last another month (I’ve only been there 2 weeks…) leaving me w/$300. If I stick it out ‘til mid August I’ll have $400. But after working my butt off this year in school I do want some vacation before I resume the grind. Wm & Mary wants me the 1st week of September I think. Ah, how I long to LIE AROUND!! In any case I will put some $$ aside if your parents will let you come & stay for a while.
