We pulled up a bunch of carpet to see what sort of floors we have to work with. The master bedroom will need some sanding and will have to have about 25% of the floor replaced, but the remaining 75% of the original pine should be salvageable. The living room has a huge patch that covers almost half the floor and so it would be too expensive to patch the old pine floor. The dining room has vinyl tile over the pine so we can't tell what shape the pine is in. Given that the living room and the dining room are really one big room, putting a new floor in the living room means we'll have to put a new floor in the dining room. So that will add one more layer for some future house archaeologist.
We also pulled up a couple of pieces of carpet in the front bedroom. The pine under there is still nice and shiny and it looks like we'll be able to salvage that floor with a minimal amount of sanding and refinishing. The back bedroom is partially an add-on so I assume it never had a pine floor and will need to have a new floor put down.
