Dear Pony-tailed Writer. I couldn't paste this into "comments" so I'm posting it.
...I note that you put "BE CAREFUL" in caps. I have not been Ashcrofted as yet, so I am never careful about my personal opinions as long as they are within the law. Besides, I have about three readers, whom I don't think will be enough to inflame homophobics.
The homophobes are always with us. It makes no difference that a respected educator wrote a book about the bell curve of black intelligence. It was rejected by the academic and scientific communities, and, besides, rednecks don't read books. And bible thumpers are busy thumping bibles. They won't hate homosexuals more for being labeled genetically different than they do right now for just being men, who happen to be having the same kind of sex with men that they--the gay haters--have with women, and have been brought up to feel guilty about.
In the main, this is not a problem of nurture or environment. Surely you know that homosexuality has existed since man has existed, and that it was glorified in the Greek culture. Not jut glorified, but considered the only cultured and respectable sex activity for adults. Were these men dressed as girls by their Mommies? Did their fathers reject them? No, they were probably born that way and, as members of the intelligencia, made it part of the culture, not the other way around. How many women were in the room when Plato held forth? Only nubile, young males lolling on fainting couches.
Ever read "Coming of age in Samoa" by Margaret Mead? There are cultural differences. She writes about adults fondling children's genitals from babyhood on--as a way to encourage their sexuality and fecundity. It was the accepted way to raise a child. We would call it "pederasty."
So far as women having hatred for gays. To this, I say--as a woman--you couldn't be more wrong. Women treasure male gays as friends--dear, understanding and gentle companions--to shop with, talk to, share confidences with, all out of the earshot of judgmental, controlling, straight males.
