SINCE WHEN IS 'LIBERAL' A DIRTY WORD? The Brtish have used the words, "liberal" and "conservative" to describe their politics for years. I've often wondered why we haven't done the same. The word "Conservative" doesn't seem to scare Mr. Bush. In fact, he calls himself a "compassionate Conservative," which is kind of a double edged sword, given that it implies Conservatives aren't necessarily noted for compassion, but that he is changing all that. Ok. How about "prudent Liberal" as a name tag for people who care about the welfare of other people?..What's more, I don't believe one word of what Karl Rove says about how he just couldn't wait for Mr. Dean to be nominated. In my opinion, he is breathing a sigh of relief. Mr. Dean took a page from the Republican play book and "energized his base." His anger over what's going on in this country and in Iraq was our best hope. We know who our base is: Young people, old people, jobless people, workers, minorities, intellectuals, middle managers, immigrants, in short, the American people. The Conservatives base is comprised of hard right wing Evangicals with half of them waiting for End Times and hoping it will in their time, Rush Limbaughs, Pat Robertsons, Anne Coulters, John Ashcrofts, and the top 10 percent, who are getting tax giveaways in a administration strategy once called "voodoo economics." Have you ever heard a word of compassion come out of their mouths? Get angry again, Mr. Dean, or forget it.
