Oh, I could go on and on about thrifts, but I'll spare you.
There was a day when one could find good art--not so-called
"thrift store" art in these stores, even pottery such as Roseville,
and Pacific. But today I sorta just walk on by. The stores are
plundered by pros, and ravaged by regulars. Where do you think
pricey antique dealers get their goods, anyway? They get their
merch at swap meets, garage sales, and thrift stores. Some of
them have an arrangement with a favored store which allows them
to skim the goods before the doors are even open. Regulars are
standing outside waiting for their turn to pillage, and they pick up
what's left. Some of the art by listed artists that I've found in thrifts, I
sold several years ago on eBay. Also some of the pottery and some of the art glass.
There are too many collectors these days, too many little old
ladies with spaces in a Mall, and too many sellers on eBay to expect to
find a treasure in a thrift. Oh, it can happen, but, usually, it's something
deep in a bin, or not recognized even by the pros and regs.
glass.
