...There is a lot of talk about “winning.”

My question still is “winning what?”

This is not our war to win or lose.

This is a Civil War between the Shiites and

the Sunnis. Along with supporters of their many militias who slip in across the loosely guarded borders.

By “Winning” do we perhaps mean the Iraqis will damn well be free or die by our hand?  We already tried that.

Trying again means more dead boys, and more

dead Iraqis. But who cares, as long as Mr. Bush has one last fling at reducing Bagdad to ashes. That'll show his Dad, you betcha.

“Winning” by taking sides in a Civil War

confirms what the Iraqis already believe: That their elected government is a "puppet" government, backed and protected by the invaders. That would be us, I do believe.

First, we bomb the bejesus out of their country, then we destroy their infastructure, then we kill whole families--children, mothers, fathers--then we destroy their morale, then we reduce their communities, one by one, where we think insurgents (read rebels) might be hiding, including homes and businesses, to grains of sand, then we have the gall to tell them  "When you stand up, we'll stand down." How do broken people in a broken country "stand up?" Little wonder that almost everyone on the planet hates us. If we keep at it, maybe someday some country that's outpaced us will tell us to "Stand up" when we are lying, bleeding, on the ground.

The blood flows month after month while men in bespoke suits sit around mile-long polished walnut tables and harrumph...They cover their asses as best they can, while giving the boy-president deniability.

They discuss their options.

They pontificate, including their favorite phrases, “everything is on the table,” or, variously, "That's off the table." The only thing they recognize on the table is lunch on a silver tray. And, oh, how they adore beginning their long, dissembling speeches with the phrase, “At the end of the day”

It makes you want to slap them silly.

It is the end of the dayThey know it. We know it. But God told George to do it. So what can I tell you?
