…We are fortunate that the Founding Fathers believed in separation of church and state, or we’d be somewhat in the same trouble as Iraq, which we now occupy.
The Iraqi Civil War is between the Shiites and the Sunnis, and their various supporters such as freelance insurgents (read rebel), El Qaeda, Taliban stragglers, and other miscellaneous sects and miscreants and your every day troublemakers who can’t resist the smell of blood. .
The word on the street is that Himself is after Sadr the radical Shiite, and his followers, who are all Shiites. The Shiites control the democratically elected government of Iraq. Many of Sadr’s people are fervently religious and follow him as they would a Cleric. There was a time when Sadr could have helped us. We passed it by.
Attacking this large and dedicated segment of the population, which would, no doubt include members of the Shiite administration doesn’t seem like such a hot idea to me. Perhaps the hard-won administration would need to go first.
Our objective before the last objective in attacking Iraq was to rid that country of Saddam Hussein. The objective before Hussein was to rid the country of WMD. When the weapons weren’t found, our mission was completed. When Hussein was captured our mission was again completed. We could have declared victory and left at almost any point. We didn’t because we want to maintain a presence in the Middle East, and because we have an abiding interest in Iraqi oil. Our new objective to justify taking sides in a Civil War, and training troops and remaining as a presence is that we are supposedly bent on installing a democracy.
I wonder what the democratically elected Shiite majority, who held up their ink stained blue fingers in a show of solidarity, think about the possibility of our attacking members of their religion.
I wonder if our government ever wonders about anything.
