When a spouse dies, the one left behind loses more than a husband or wife. This solitary soul also loses an entire adult life.
In the eons ahead perhaps people will marry or take partners for only twenty years at a time. A sequential partnership might be preferable to a person losing his or her whole life. Lose twenty years at a time, yes, that's sad too, but not as heart breaking as wiping out one's life... because death of one after a sixty or fifty year marriage is cruel and unusual punishment. For what? For daring to be born?
