The Devil's Excrement

  The Devil's Excrement
Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.

Abstention appears to be very high, which means the Government´s supporters did not show up either. This could make things quite different or at least produce results that are unexpected in many places. Somehow I detect a change in tone on the part of the Government. Are they worried?Very inetresting, they would look really bad if they did not sweep like in August so the servers must now be ready to do their dirty work. Will they really allow the press in? Let´s see if they do.

Using the "true" numbers from the recall vote and adding a little abstention and polls, I reached the conclusion on Friday that the opposition its unlikely to win more than seven Governorships. Add cheating and we are talking three to four. If there is more, it woudl prove the August 15th. fraud, but you can be sure they will cheat again.

Since he is there, check out Daniel´s website http://daniel-venezuela.blogspot.com/ for very good reporting of what is going on. Kudos to him for calling Minister of Interior and Justice Jesse Chacon, Jesse James, thst is exactly how he is behaving!

While there are some problems in some voting centers, by now all of them are open and it is clear that abstention will be the winner today. Abstention appears to be quite high, so high in fact that the Vice-President said he was worried, a clear sign that teher is abstention in both sides. Both the Mayor of Chacao and the Goevrnro of Miranda rebuked the Minister of the Interior and Justice for his threats, sending the message that come closing time people will be going to voting centers to see the counting. The Mayor of Chacao threatened back, saying they will open all of the boxes like teh law says. Confrontation ahead? I don't know, but it will be very interesting tonight. I am sure the CNE thugs have a plan B, like keeping voting centers open until later so that people get tired and go away. Some centers ahve reported that paper ballots show a different choice than what voters are pushing, even showing the candidate for Mayor as the choice for Governor. In Caracas, one center has yet to reopen due to this problem. How can this happen with these perfect machines?
