The Devil's Excrement

  The Devil's Excrement
Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.

Quite a bit of confusion on the Carabobo, Miranda, Yaracuy and even the Zulia elections. In the first three opposition candiadte claim they can prove they won. In Carabobo even the CNE appears to eb unsure of what happened. Meanwhile in Zulia Rosales' contender says there is a technical tie, while Rosales claims he won. CNE Directors ahve gone to Valencia and San Felipe to oversee the final counting.

Meanhwile the CNE has claimed that it would post results on the wbepage at 3 PM, but it is past 8 PM and there is nothing. Trying to make the numbers fit the results?

In Caracas, theer is also a question of whether Ocariz beat Rangel's son in the Sucre municipality. If Ocariz beats Rangel, then Primero Justicia would have won in Sucre, Chacao, Baruta and El Hatillo, with the Chavistas winning in Libertador District. This makes you wonder how Juan Barreto managed to win as Metropolitan Mayor. Libertador may be bigger, but not that much bigger. Wished I had the CNE number to compare.

Just to prove that we live in a country without law or legal recourse, the Misniter of Inetrior and Justice Jesse "James" Chacon, said as he left the Cabinet meeting that the results were "irreversible", despite the fact that the candiadates are not claiming they were cheated, or they had exit polls, they are saying tehy ahve compelet tallies of their states and it adds up to them winning. In fact, Mendoza has more votes in his tally than the CNE. Only in the mind of Jesse James is that irreversible.

Enrique Mendoza claims he has the tallies of each center which prove he won. Salas Feo claims he won with 63%. Here we go again...

This is really depressing and I don´t think we will hear anything else during the night tonight, so we should all go to bed. (Mendoza is claiming victory in Miranda as I write this)

Results In Yaracuy state where opposition Governor Lapi is running for reelection are too close to call. The rest apparently are not that close except in Carabobo.

Here is a table of the results:

http://www.globovision.com/documentos/cartas.comunicados/2004.10/31/primerboletin/index.php

In Caracas, MVR candidate Juan Barreto won as Mayor for the Metropolitan area with 62%, Jose Vicente Rangel with 52%, Leopoldo Lopez with 80% and Henrique Capriles with 77%.Abstention was apparently (not confirmed) over 60%.

Primero Justicia mayors win in Chacao, Baruta and El Hatillo

Supposedly, the opposition only obtained the states of Zulia and Nueva Esparta, with Chavez' MVR party obtaining the other 20. I can not belive that Lapi lost in Yaracuy and Salas Feo in Carabobo.

Chavez' MVR party gets 20 out of 22 Governorships

Here are some of the preeliminary results by the CNE:

The states of Carabobo and Miranda have been won by Acosta Carles and Cabello of Chavez' MVR party. Hard to believe Salas lost.

There have been "incidents", but so far no major confrontation other than in Bolivar state in order to do the audits. People have gathered around voting centers after all and while the military has stopped many from coming in for the "audit", which is not an audit but a counting of the ballots. I guess Minister Jesse James could not get away with it, but the military has been a pain in many places. In Bolivar state there are reports that the National Guard has surrounded the headquarters of the opposition candidate. The Chavistas are claining they got all but two of the Governorships, the opposition says they have at least eight, so go figure. The truth is likely to be in the middle. The Chavistas claim that the opposition won Nueva Esparta and Zulia, but reports (see Daniel's blog) from the Yaracuy and Zulia audits suggest these two Governors nwon. CNE sources are telling people that the manual votye has to be counted before conclduing anything. Is that where the trick is this time around?
