The Devil's Excrement

  The Devil's Excrement
Observations focused on the problems of an underdeveloped country, Venezuela, with some serendipity about the world (orchids, techs, science, investments, politics) at large. A famous Venezuelan, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo, referred to oil as the devil's excrement. For countries, easy wealth appears indeed to be the sure path to failure. Venezuela might be a clear example of that.

The Government has "won" 85% of all races for Mayors or 210 municipalities. A remarkable result given that the last municipal elections were done at the peak of Chavez' popularity in 2000, but I guess virtual voting is like that.

Meanwhile, the races in Carabobo, Yaracuy and Miranda are close but with the pro-Chvaez candidate leading in all three.

For those that will blame abstention, abstention was the same level in the regional elections in 2000/2001.

Well, now Chavez has oil at $50, 85% of cities, 87% of Governorships. What will be his excuse in 2006 for thing continuing to deteriorate? Acts of God?
