This will be the last Orchid post in this blog. Last December I moved the rest of the blog to wordpress and only kept the orchids here, but today I learned that they are shutting down the whole thing in December and my subscription ends tomorrow. I have been looking for a good photo template in wordpress with no luck so far, but at least I have one I like a lil bit now. In any case, I hope to find a great one soon, and you can then look in:

Lots of flowers when I returned

I was away for one month and when I came back there were so many flowers that I did not even have to set up anything special to take the pictures:

Above left: Cattleya Gaskelliana semi-alba. Right: A nice Cattleya Gaskelliana corelua and if you like it, imagine (next picture) the plant had....

Last week was indeed a great week

I did have a great week last week, not only because my blogging seemed to catch some attention (too much for my own taste), but because on the weekend I took some of my orchid plants to the Exhibit of Natural Science Society at the Transport Museum, where my plants won three first prizes and two third prizes.

Prizes are given for each type of orchid and then a prize is given for the best group orchid. One of my plants won best type, best in group, but more importantly it won the prize for the best cultivated plant of the exhibit (I do have a hand in that!). Here is the picture, it is not the best (taken with phone), but you can see it up close in this link (bottom pictures):

My new fertilizer regime is paying off, on March 15th. it will be the one year anniversary of my new program using Peters Excel CAl Mag and it works!

Sophronitis Coccinea Aurea on the left, this plant flowered three times in 2008. On the right, Pablo Figueredo sent this Shomburgkia Undulata Marisabel de Las Casas.



Had troubles getting this Comparettia Falcata all in focus.

This is the first flowering of this Cattleya Jenmanii Gerd x Claudia. Coerulea Jenmanii tend to have a horrible shape, but this one is not so bad.



Two Cattleya Walkeriana. The Corulea on the right is called Manhattan Blue, it is not great, but the plant grows a lot, this was part of six flowers the plant had this time around.

My Oncidium Onustum, now known as Zelenkoa Onusta bloomed spectacularly this year as you can see.



On the left a Dendrobium hybrid, no idea what the name is. On the right a dirt orchid from Venezuela Sobralia Leocxantha. (I think)



On the left a close up of a Sobralia flower, looks like a Cattleya, except that it lasts 24 hours.



A very nice Cattleya Walkeriana tipo from Brazil, this is the one with the largest contrast I have between the lip and the sepals. On the right a Picta.

On the left my second plant of Coccinea Aurea has flowered for the first time, proving is no fluke that they grow well here in Caracas (Not as nice as the other one). On the right a Cattleya Gaskelliana.

Some special Species

This is my very special Cattleya Violacea, not only is it free flowering, but this time it sent up two shoots with ten flowers (six and four) as shown on the left. This despite the fact that we crossed it in April with Cattleya Violacea "Muse" and I removed the fruit two weeks ago. On the right a close up of the six flowers.

On the left is the first flowering a Cattleya Jenmanii Kathy x Color which I bougth from Xavier Caballero. On the right is the "small" flower which is large.

Miranda Orchid Exhibit 2008

The Miranda Orchid Society show was held two weeks ago. I donÂ´t like using flash when I take orchid pictures and I only took my monopod and it was very dark. Most pictures did not come out very well, I salvaged these three:

Eduardo and Santos send their regular contributions. If my memory is right the top two, the two WalerianaÂ´s belong to Eduardo and the remaidner to Santos.

Flowering picking up, hopefully not too early for the September Miranda Exhibit. On the left top, my awarded Cattleya Jenmanii, larger flowers and more flowers than ever before. On the right a nice alba, but I have no clue what it is.

Top left: This Cattleya Mossiae does not appear to know that it should have flowered three months ago. Not bad for its firest time, note the solid lip and the flaring. On the right a Cattleya Percivaliana named Gabriela.

On the left a Phalenopsis species, Phal. Cornu Cervi, anyone in Caracas that wanst one I have a few to trade. On the left a hybrid of Cattleya Broughtonia with Cattleya Bicolor.

My flowering has really slowed down, but Eduardo sent some really nice pictures of species:

On the left, Paillonante Pendiculata. On the right a very white Cattleya Walkeriana Alba.

On the left, a nice Stanhopea Grandiflora. This species can be found in the East of Venezuela and to me ius one of the most beautiful orchids there is, I used to have one when I lived in Los Teques, but it died when I moved to Caracas. It blooms for three days and has a spectacular scent, its adaption to the short flowering time, you have to attract that insect fast!. On the right a Stranticornia Saccata.

Grammatophyllum Scriptum

A year ago I thought this plant of Grammatophyllum Scriptum was going to die as it started losing leaves and turning brown. I moved it more into the sun, much brighter light and then I started using a fertilizer with Magnesium and Calcium that seemd to do the trick.

It has 8 shoots, each with 50-54 flowers, you can see all eight on the top two pictures. In the bottom two pictures a close up of the individual flowers.

Two nice Laelia Purpurata from Brazil, very similar, with petals and sepals which are pinkish. Love them both.

On the left is a very nice Cattleya Walkeriana from Brazil. This is the first flowering of 24 plants a friend brought me about two and a half years ago from that country. Very Promising! On the right another Cattleya Aclandiae, notice how it is much darker than last week´s

Today I decided to try to take the pictures of my orchids in full sun. Results are cool, hope you like them.

On the left, a nice Laelia Tenebrosa from Brazil, I love the contrast betweem the Lip and the sepals and petals. On the right my faithful Cattleya Aclandiae.

On the left another nice Laelia Purpurata from Brazil. On the right, Schomburgkia Thomsoniana from from the Cayman Islands.

On the left a nice blue Cattleya Walkeriana from Brazil, on the right, an Equitant Oncidium hybrid.
